Dr suspects underactive thyroid but home test clear

I have been having loads of different symptoms that individually wouldn't send me to the doctor but all together are getting a bit much now.

I'm always tired (who isn't with three kids to look after!),
I've been feeling the return of the depression symptoms I have had in the past,
my periods have gone from heavy to really heavy,

I ache all over at various times
I'm getting hairier - my tweezers now live in my pocket!
And over the last few months I've developed carpal tunnel syndrome.

My GP suspects it could be an underactive thyroid and has taken a whole raft of blood tests including various hormones ie LH, FSH, Testosterone, prolactin along with glucose, TSH, FBC, U&E cholesterol etc (I think he ticked about a dozen boxes on the form) U&E and cholesterol are the standard ones I have done twice a year so he added them in while I was there anyway.

I took a home TSH test which came back normal, how reliable are the home tests? if it's not that what else will he be looking for? I have well controlled high blood pressure and am more than a few stone overweight but am generally OK other than osteoarthritis. A few months back I would happily go out for a walk and walk 4-5 miles just fine. Now doing the school run (about a half mile round trip) takes it out of me.

Hi, was going to post myself, so can I join you if thats OK?

I have two nodules on my thyroid, one large grape size, one smaller. Been biopsied etc all OK at moment.

Tested my blood last year was OK. So I am doubtful that its my thyroid.

Just taken some more blood today, I went to the Doctors last week, because my hair has gone so thin over time, and is now actively falling out. I only do my eyebrows about every 6 weeks, they are so thin.

Memory Loss, enough for me to notice, and other people to comment.

If I get a cut or scratch, they take forever to heal, and always scar badly.

I have a rash on one arm (weird). Almost boil like.

Depression, ongoing for a long time.

My periods are very light, a complete none event now, which is weird, when I used to have horrendously heavy ones! (Good symptom)

Weight is terrible.

I am been tested from what I understand on the labels on the forms for just about everything.

Because test was negative last year, not convinced, which is why I have joined you!

Nice to have some company - aah yes, the memory, I forgot that one I would LOL but it's getting quite frustrating! I forget basic words etc, last week I went shopping, parked the trolley by the car, unlocked the car, got in and drove home - I was home (15 miles away!) before I realised what I'd done. Thankfully DH was working nearby where I'd been shopping and was able to collect the stuff I'd left behind. I have to set reminders on my phone for everything, including collecting my youngest from school!

Would not use home tests re thyroid. You need proper measured results.

This is a good website on thyroid issues:-

Use this one instead:-

No idea on home tests but you must chase your GP for the blood test results. Make sure you find out the actual readings and the range considered normal by the lab. Don't let the Dr just tell you that it's within normal.

Thanks, I will. I have an appointment to see him again early october (he's away for a couple of weeks before that) I will ask exactly what was tested and wahat the numbers were.

Seems to me we will have to wait, but did look at the website which was interesting. Thanks for that.

Good Luck Fuzymum and let me know how you get on...
