I have a seriously painful foot. It feels like something has clicked out of place on the outer edge. It hurts to put weight on it, it hurts when dh rubs it for me, I'm in a lot of pain, but don't know who to see to get it evaluated/fixed. Would be happy to pay for a treatment if that means it gets fixed faster. Would a podiatrist be the right person to see?

Hi Makes,

Did this happen suddenly or has it come on gradually?

Is there any swelling or bruising around the area in question?

Is the area hot or red?

The metatarsal bones that are the main five long bones of the foot are reasonably easy to fracture as a number of footballers will tell you inc D Beckham. They are relatively thin bones and under immense stress everytime you put your weight on them. They are also prone to stress fractures which is a distinct possiblilty in your case. Only an x-ray in A&E will confirm.

No swelling or bruising, not hot or red. I don't remember a time when it started, but it didn't gradually get worse, it just started... Shall I just go and annoy the gp with my non specific sore foot then?

Yes do go and see your GP and then he/she can refer you to a podiatrist if need be. Don't ignore it for too long. I did this hoping my foot pain would go away. It didn't and turned out to be something called a 'Mortons Neuroma' . I could hardly walk in the end it was so painful and had to have surgery. What I did regret was not speaking to anyone sooner and getting it all sorted out quicker.

I'm not saying you've got what I had but I think the general rule of thumb is not to ignore foot pain.

Hope you can get it sorted.
