DD has high temp - advice please

DD2 has had a rotten cold for the last couple of days and her temp. has been up and down. It was 39.6 earlier this evening , so I gave her a tepid bath which seemed to calm her and cool her down a bit . She has had Calpol and Nurofen but she was still quite hot when she fell asleep - wouldn't let me take her temperature.

It took her ages to go to sleep - kept sitting up in her cot and looking around, so I guess she can't be too bad.

Might be a daft question but I wasn't sure what to dress her in - she usually has a vest, sleepsuit and 2.5 tog growbag. Tonight I have put thin cotton pjamas on her and covered her with a light sheet. I'm worried that she might be too hot even in this, but am also worried that she will cool down and then wake up cold.

Any suggestions? Just need reassurance really as dh is away (back tomorrow), it's the first time she's been like this, and as dd1 is almost 8, I can't really remember how I used to deal with her when she was sick.

She's almost 12mths btw.

I think you have done the right thing. Just keep an eye on her.

starlover · 16/03/2006 21:26

if she still feels hot then take sheet off... just keep an eye on her for a while, and when she begins to cool down then cover her back up

Whizzz · 16/03/2006 21:26

Sounds like what DS has had for the past 2 days.
See how she is when you go to bed & if neccessary add a blanket perhaps

Chapsmum · 16/03/2006 21:27

I would leave her in just a nappy and a sheet, my wee chap was unwell like this recently and he slept in his nappy and a sheet! cool room and a fan if you have one.

Rhubarb · 16/03/2006 21:27

Can you keep the heating on low so that her room stays at an even temperature? Get her just right for now in her room. After all, you don't want to be checking her all night!

BonyM · 16/03/2006 21:28

Do you think I should leave her in her cot, or bring her into bed with me when I go to bed so that I can keep tabs on her through the night? I guess she would cry out if she got any hotter or too cold?

God, I sound like a first-time mum - it's horrible when there's no-one else in the house to consult with.

Have turned the radiator off in her room as it seemed quite warm - it's 20 degrees atm.

Not in your bed, you'll warm her up too much. If her room stays at that temp all night and she feels ok now, then she'll not overheat and nor will she freeze.

Do you have a baby alarm you can plug in next to your bed to put your mind at rest?

Mercy · 16/03/2006 21:33

I think 16-18 is the recommended temp for rooms

I think teh pjs and sheet or blanket should be fine. At 12 months she'll let you know if she's not happy!

BonyM · 16/03/2006 21:34

I brought her into bed with me last night when she woke at 3am with a high temp. I gave her calpol and she slept with me although she didn't have any covers over her and I didn't lie too close to her. She was bouncing around the bed laughing at 6am but has been up and down all day.

sounds like my dd atm. She's got a temp too, up and down all day. I've given her some calpol and sent her back to bed. Her room gets quite cold at night, she has cotton pjs on and a thick cotton sheet over her. She's got a guilt she can pull up if she's too cold.

Cotton is the way to go, at least it's breathable.

Thanks guys - it's just good to talk to someone else and get a bit of reassurance. Dh always seems to be away at the worse possible times!

Sometimes they sweat these things out too. I reckon that's what dd will do tonight. She'll wake up soaked in the morning, but temp will be gone and she'll be feeling a lot better. My gran used to swear on "sweating out" viruses. I wouldn't do it deliberately, but dd has done this once or twice herself!

BonyM · 16/03/2006 21:43

Oh yes - my mum used to always swear by this when we were kids! I used to know that if I woke up in soaking sheets I'd be feeling better! Yuck.

Sweating out a fever is bad - see bit on Body Temp

Rhubarb · 17/03/2006 10:27

Ooops, dd sweated hers out last night! Other than stay up all night fanning her, there was little I could do! She's fine now though.

BonyM · 17/03/2006 12:22

Glad your dd is better Rhubarb. Mine is up and down We had a restless night but temperature now seems to be back to normal but she is very grouchy today and still full of catarrh and coughing.

At least dh is back today to ease some of the burden!

OP posts:
Rhubarb · 17/03/2006 13:13

Yeah, mine has a cough today and her breath stinks too! But the worst of it is past, look at it that way!

She was up and down last night too - I got fed up of hearing about people in her room watching her! She came into ours but there isn't that much room and I was squashed between her sweating away and dh's elbows! Your dd will be right as rain tomorrow, you'll see!
