Osteoporosis ... steps to minimise the risks ...

My mother has, and grandmother had, osteoporisis and I guess this must mean that genetically I may be predisposed to it. So, what can I do to minimise the risks - I'm 38, take no exercise and don't eat enough calcium-containing foods.

I intend to start exercising (immediately) and will start improving my diet again but does anyone know whether these steps may have any effect and also whether there is anything else I can do, supplements I could take etc?

TIA

ni you breast feed you babies, this is a huge way of preventing osteoparosis.
pilaties and yoga are also good ways. In fact any execrcise coupled with a calcium rich diet are great preventative measures but this has to be a lifestyle choice. Basically when you exercise your body uses the calcium in your bones to repair your mscles and soft tissues, ir you eat a calcium rich diet the calium in your bones is replenished and then some so it is important to do both.

Glucosamine is a fab suplament for joints and cartilage as is cod liver oil. I would steer clear of purelycalcium suplaments unless your gp prescribes them as they can cause probs.

Thanks Chapsmum & Majorca ... I took Mum for a scan yesterday and it got me thinking about it. I've breastfed for over 3 years now so that's a plus Grin and the link to the Nat Osteoporisis Society is good - makes me more determined to get off my lazy butt and do some exercise!!
