Hello, I got an infected mosquito bite and was prescribed a 7 day supply of erythromycin 250mg, 4 times a day and also some steroid cream by the gp.

By then end of today, I will have taken 5 full days worth (20 pills in total) and they are making me feel really, really sick. I would like to know if I can stop taking them after I finish today's last dose. My mosquito bite is on the mend - the inflamed area has reduced in size (now 3 inches across) and the colour has changed from a very angry red to pink, with small blotches of ordinary skin colour through the pink. It no longer itches, having itched like mad and waking me up in the night. I still have a little scab where the actual bite was, this scab is ok and getting smaller (1/2 cm across).

It would be great if I could safely stop taking the antibiotics and not feel so sick!
Thanks for any replies!

Sorry but i would say finish the course. Or go back to GP and get them to change antibiotics

I will finish them then, thanks. As long as I don't actually throw up, I should be able to just about take it!

Please don't stop taking the antibiotics, this can actually be quite dangerous as it can lead to the development of 'superbugs', also although their may now be few enough bacteriavin your body to feel better there may still be enough left to reproduce and make you ill again. Erythromycin gives me' horrific abdomen pains so I fully understand where you're coming from. I'd suggest making an appt with the doctor to see if you can change antibiotic or trying to brave it out. I'm no medic by the way, hopefully one may be along soon.

I will brave it out, particularly as the gp will now be shut for the weekend. Stopping them was just a thought because I know when my DC have had a chest infection in the past, they were prescribed 5 day courses of ABs, so just wondered if 5 was enough for me. If they hadn't been making me feel so ill, I would have just taken the entire coure without considering stopping.

Some antibs give me the raging trots, OP, so I feel your pain. I had some for a dental infection a few years back and spent the whole week running to the loo every five mins... joyous! Cleared up the infection though...

Oh yes, I had them for dental prob when DS was a baby. Poor little thing was breastfed and had diahorea (sp?!) for a week due to my ABs!
