Assuming I have broken my little toe, should I not run for a while?

Brief details

Smacked my little toe on an underbed storage box nearly two weeks ago on holiday.
Very bruised, very painful for several days but able to walk so no problem.
Bak to everyday routine including training which includes about 15 minutes running on treadmill.
It doesn't hurt any more when I run than when I walk but I still have pain constantly , like a headache iyswim.

Dh says I need to stop doing any running ad /or go to a&e.
Is that true

Hmm I think perhaps you should get it checked out to confirm if it's broken or not. I wouldn't recommend running in the meantime in case you do more damage. I know it's hard I like running too and I hate not being able to.
Having recently recovered from a foot injury myself though, unfortunately it takes time for it to get better.

Also when the endorphins kick in when you run it's easier to do more than you should with an injury.

Oh blimey. Is just sortt of ignoring it not a good strategy then? Grin

It's just because they can't actually do anything it will feel like a waste of three hours.
How about if I don't run for a week and see if it starts to feel better?

Paggy, it depends, sometimes they heal right, sometimes they don't quite so it could end up a bit wonky.

You should get an x ray at least pet.

OneHandFlapping · 06/09/2012 18:43

Good luck with getting a toe X rayed in A&E. Ours won't do toes, but send you away with a flea in your ear.

I found X trainer (if you have access to one) is a toe-friendly way of maintaining fitness while waiting for it to heal.

Pagwatch · 06/09/2012 18:44

Oh, okay. You are kind. I don't need anymore wonky bits.
I will try and go inthe morning.

I broke my little toe a few years back and the local walk-in centre wouldn't x-ray it as there's nothing they can do for a broken toe anyway. I did take a few weeks off from running though, which was hard, but I think you need to rest it a bit to let it heal.

cucumbereyes · 06/09/2012 18:48

I had the same thing and went to A&E. They said there is nothing they do differently whether it is broken or just bruised. They strapped it up to the next couple of toes to keep it immobilised. I also couldn't run for a couple of weeks but now it's fine.

Oh Blush my friend broke hers once and had a cast up to her thigh.

Maybe it was a different toe.

caramelsmadfuzzytail · 06/09/2012 19:16

I broke my toe when I changed a lightbulb Grin. I went to my local minor injuries unit. Because it was not wonky, they said to leave it and it would heal itself, I now have a toe that fits snuggly against the next toe.

so far (touch wood) at the age of 40 its the only bone I have ever broken.

Dh is loving every minute tbh. I am new to training regularly and he is a rugby 'train until you vomit' type.
So when I said 'it is just sore and I just want to know what I have to do' he said 'look it up on NHS direct and they can explain exactly how you man the fuck up'
Git. Utter git.

Well, when I broke my little toe last year I wasn't able to wear shoes for 6 weeks, and was going everywhere with flip flops. After these 6 weeks, I had to buy new shoes one size bigger and a lot wider. Running was out of question. I tried swimming but couldn't. I had this weird feeling my toe was falling at the bottom of the pool.

If its not your big toe, or deformed (which you would already have noticed!) then no X-ray will be performed. I fractured and disc located my little toe, but once relocated was running on it 2 weeks later. I'm not tough by any means!! It hurt locally around the break. Usual advice is exercise as tolerated. Ie it may hurt but wont do any harm if toe in right position. Supportive shoes and will prob hurt around the break for 6-8 weeks.
