been for a scan today and have a 3cm cyst on right ovary, seeing consultant next Wedn

anyone experienced this and what was the outcome, did you have it removed? Is it safe to do this on an ovary, do you have to have your ovary removed????

I had a cyst and had it lasered under general anaesthetic. Went fine and no side effects.

I've had two cysts successfully removed by keyhole surgery. The last one was 4cm and on my left ovary. I didn't have to have my ovary removed at the time.

However I'm now due to have another cyst removed again on my left and have asked that my ovary be removed this time. The cysts seem to be recurring and I'm hoping that gettting rid of the ovary will prevent them coming back.

My surgeon discovered a grapefruit sized cyst on my ovary when he was doing a completely different operation! He had to remove both the cyst and the ovary. It was done laporascopically while I was under general anaesthetic for the original operation.

I had one a couple of years back. My consultant took a "watchful waiting" approach- scanned every 3-4 months ( privately) to see what was happening. He was 98% convinced it was benign ( best they can be from scans alone) and after 18 months it started to shrink- and has now gone.

3cm is pretty small and unless there are any other worrying features they may well leave alone and rescan in a couple of months. At that size it could well be just a normal follicular cyst that we all get as part of our cycle. I think it is pretty standard to not report simple cysts smaller than 3cm for this reason. Obviously symptoms etc must be considered too. Id really try not to worry.

The general rule is that any cyst over 5cmas should be investigated- especialy in post menopausal women for whom cancer is a real possibility.

Havng said that, scans can show a lot about the cyst and it's usually only if there is any doubt over it being benign, or if it it is very large and causing problems such as pain, that they are removed.

Mine was 3cms and my dr followed the guidance of frequent scans (I am post meno) and blood tests.

If the NHS was to admit every womean who had a small cyst and remove it, they'd be inundated- they are really common and most go away on their own- so try not to worry.

i have endometriosis and have scans every 6 months. 12 months ago the cyst - if it the same one was 2cm so grown 1cm in 12 months.

seeing the consultant next week so will see what he says.

the pain I get is very much "period/ovulation" related but only get pain some months. in fact havent had any pain for 4 months until last week

the CA125 test apparently doesnt really help if you have endo as this muffles the test apparently

I have had two ovarian cysts:

1st - I was 13, the GP told me and my mum I was experiencing period pain and I was sent away. Repeat ad nauseum. It then twisted ("underwent tortion") and so the fallopian tube was no longer viable, so both the ovary and tube were ultimately removed.
That said, it was "grapefruit" sized and I believe that affected the outcome. Yours is currently much smaller!

2nd - during my mid-20s, on the other side (clearly!!) and I was more self aware. This one nevertheless grew to the size of a human head at the point of removal. My surgeon had mad skillz though, it was removed with necessarily some ovarian tissue, but my remaining ovary is intact. I'm now an the cusp of testing its functionality with my partner Shock/Wink [TTC soooon].

So that's my ovarian cyst experience. There are two key points. 3cm is still in the realms of a small cyst. Whilst I'm not a surgeon I'd daresay a laproscopic intervention would be available if they even decide to remove it at the moment. Secondly, (unless I am ignorant of your situation) nature is smart and along with lungs, kidneys and so many other parts, you have two ovaries.

It may be that it is an endometrioma then if you have endometriosis. This would also explain why they reported it at only 2cm (last yr), as a small simple cyst this size would not usually get mentioned on a report.
