How high of fever for baby until you head to A&E?

My 9 1/2 month old DS has a cold (runny nose) and a fever of 38-40 deg. C. I'm sort of toying with a trip to A&E if it goes up again. It's down to 37.6 now. But, what are they going to do when I get there? Give him paracetemol? Put him in a luke warn bath? Nothing? Send me home? So, I'm sort of inclined to think he's better off at home where at least he'll get some sleep.

Has anyone been to A&E with a baby with a high fever? If so, what did they do when you got there?

I know that's exactly what I said when I first heard about - what a stupid name for a virus! But then it does look like that!

Or maybe dd went a bit OTT with the red colour of her pen whilst we weren't looking!

Dd had a type of convusion with a high temp but hers had been well over 40 when it happened. Wasn't a fit but she started shivering and her lips turned blue but it stopped as soon as we cooled her down (it was the middle of january and her temp had dropped by the time we were in the car).
We phoned NHS 24 the said take her to A&E, no questions, although when we were there all they did was give her nurofen, it seems to work better than calpol and lasts longer so might be worth getting a hold of some.

MrsRecycle · 15/03/2006 22:20

I'm off to bed now Uwila - hope his (and your) night is restful. If you need me to pop over tomorrow, let me know. Definitely echo the nurofen - we give them both (or 2 hours a part) at the same time.

How was your night, Uwila? How is he this morning?

crazydazy · 16/03/2006 09:39

Is your LO okay today Uwila?

Uwila · 16/03/2006 09:46

Hiya. Thanks for asking. Grin

He's a bit better. Still has a fever, but I'm at work (reluctantly -- I'd have to take the day unpaid to stay home and simply can't afford it), but nanny has headed off to get nurofen and medised at the chemist.

DD was sick last night too. Just as I got DS off to bed, she started screaming from their room (they share a room). And she had puked all over her bed. And she puked again about an hour later -- but mostly in the toilet the second time. She seems fine this morning, though.

Then, my nanny called the cleaner this morning to tell her we were sick and she probably shouldn't come. Cleaner told her she wanted half pay. Nanny said no way. And then she fired the cleaner (the cleaner deserved this for a variety of reasons).

So it's been a hectic morning/night for us.

Your nanny kicks ass, Uwila!

Sorry the DCs are still poorly Sad

Uwila · 16/03/2006 10:08

Yes, I must say I like her. She also came out of her room at 11:00 to help me sort out puke covered DD. While I took the bedding downstairs, she organised and put on a clean set of pyjamas. It's definately not her job to tend to pukey girl at 11:00pm.

Oh Uwila - sorry to hear about your DD now - give her my love. Hope DS is feeling a bit better.
You really do have a gem of a Nanny - firing on the spot - a woman after my own heart if only I had the courage. I wanted to fire our cleaner but just gave her notice (coward I know but our ap said she would have done the same thing!).
The cheek of these cleaners eh Shock.

Hope tonight is better for you and the kids.

The funny thing is nanny has been intimidated by this cleaner sinwe hired her (about a month ago). And my nanny isn't one to be easily intimidated. So I just think this cleaner must be quite the bully.

The first day we had her I asked nanny how she was and seh said "She's really good. The house looks really clean..... long pause....... but I'm scared of her." I just laughed. But, finally I said you know we hire her to make your life easier not harder.

Cleaner wouldn't iron children'ss clothes. If she did windows, she asked for more money. I have to pay extra for this and extra for that, and these are things that were not extra when I hired her. So, bye bye. Back on the hunt for a newcleaner.....

DD is fine today. DS is getting better. Has a slight fever now but not much. Grin
