Can conjunctivitis make you feel ill?

HappyMumof2 · 15/03/2006 18:57

dd had conjunctivitis diagnosed this morning. She's been ok today but this evening her eye looks worse than ever and she's really not well. She also seems to have a bit of a temperature. Is this normal?? I wonder if she's got something else on top of the conjunctivitis or not........

I'm probably more worried as last time she had it she developed menengitis. It was never confirmed but the doctors suspected it was what had caused it so I am a bit paranoid probably Sad

I'm having real trouble getting the drops in and I'm just not sure how much is going in. Any tips on how to get it in?? I've got no one here to help me hold her.

Can you put the drops in when she is asleep, she may be coming down with a nasty cold, the two often go together.

HappyMumof2 · 15/03/2006 19:04

Thanks waterfalls. She's actually just getting over a cold. She said her ear was hurting this morning. GP looked and couldn't see anything. I've asked her if it's her ear and she says no it's her eye.

I really am paranoid about this as she's really not herself. I wonder if me forcing the drops into her eyes has upset her and she's got herself in a state?

I will try when she's asleep, thanks.

Just try and get the drops in as best as you can. Even if you don't know how much is going in, some is better than none.

I've had to give my kids nose drops in the past (probaby a bit easier than eye drops) I used to sit on them to do it! Clamp their arms with my legs and be as quick as possible. They don't like it but it has to be done. I think you can get cream for conjunctivitus can't you? Maybe the Dr could prescribe that instead if the drops aren't suitable.

HappyMumof2 · 15/03/2006 20:39

Thanks kid, I'm going to take her back in the morning I think. She's really hot. I've given her medised but she's very unsettled and tossing and turning. It's probably unrelated to the conjunctivitis but I just remember last time......

I asked her again where it hurt before she fell asleep and she said her mouth so maybe her throat?

ds is on more antibiotics as well, was he hyper today??? they are full of orange colouring!

OP posts:

He wasn't really hyper, he did keep facing the back of the classroom to look at a misbehaving child and laughing at him. I also saw him playing with a couple of other kids at lunch time, using one of the boys to push backwards and forwards between him and a friend! They all seemed to be enjoying the game!

He hasn't been asking to go to the loo, should he be going frequently?

HappyMumof2 · 15/03/2006 20:57

not sure really. I suppose it's a good sign he's not needing to go so much and not having any leaks!

He said he got beaten up today by A at last play. Think there might be another side to the story though Wink

No, he told you the truth. A said that he 'accidently' stamped on K's stomach Angry K said it didn't hurt but thats not the point, how exactly do you do that accidently?!

I have reported it and it will be dealt with.

(I'm off to watch The Apprentice now, so not ignoring you if you reply to me here!)

HappyMumof2 · 16/03/2006 11:41

took dd to the GP this morning. She has a throat infection & her conjunctivitis.
Bless her, she said it was her mouth Sad

wessexgirl · 16/03/2006 19:46

They took about 4/5 days with my dd1 who had conjunctivitis + a virusy cold a couple of weeks back. It's been very common round here since christmas.

NannyL · 16/03/2006 19:51

i didnt feel at all ill when i had conjunctivitus...

guess she has that and a virus!

just read thread and noticed that she has!!!

When i had CJ mine felt MUCH better within 24 hours of starting my drops all gone within 3 days. (but then i am an adult)

HappyMumof2 · 16/03/2006 20:22

thanks Smile

It probably will take a bit longer as I'm hardly getting any in her eyes at all! It just looks so horrible atm Sad Think I might run out of drops before it's clear at this rate!

How is she doing tonight, does she still have a temp?

HappyMumof2 · 17/03/2006 10:50

her temperature's down now but her eyes are worse Sad so I'm assuming it's viral rather than bacterial conjunctivitis. Does anyone know of anything else I can try?

Worried as last time it didn't respond to the drops and developed into menengitis Sad

HappyMumof2 · 17/03/2006 18:42

been at a & e all day as dd's eyes were so bad this morning, her temperature went sky high but her hands and feet stayed cold, so feared history was repeating itself....... Sad

her conjunctivitis has spread to nose & throat and she has been prescribed augmentin & stronger drops as the other ones weren't touching it.

There's something about my dd and conjunctivitis...... Sad

Poor little thing, she really is suffering with it. Hope the medicine they gave her helps. She really didn't seem herself.

Just thought I'd let you know that my eye was very sticky last night and this morning! I hope I haven't got it too. It feels like there is something sharp in my eye but I can't see anything there when I check in the mirror.

HappyMumof2 · 18/03/2006 18:31

hi kid, she really was bad yesterday. Her eyes were just pouring green stuff along with her nose. She had a temperature and was completely hyper. It was quite scary.

She's a lot better as the drops & antibiotics she's on are so strong they're clearing it up already. I've realised that she just doesn't respond to normal antibiotics. Her ear infections never responded to amoxicillan and her conjuncitivits (this and before) never responded to the standard drops. Hospital confirmed that the previous conjunctivitis would have been what caused the menengitis...... there must be something about her that can't handle conjuncitivitis without it turning nasty Sad

She is much, much better now though! Smile

ds and me went on our 'journey' today btw, went really well and so pleased we decided to go Smile

Glad it went well, I didn't realise he was still there. Do you think K will say anything to anyone about it?

Glad R is making a recovery, I bet you will go to great lengths to make sure she isn't exposed to conjuctivitus again.
