Lump in breast. Reassurances from people who've had ones that turned out to be cysts or boils or whatever, please.

Obviously I will take myself off to the GP next week, but we are just about to go on a short holiday and I'm not missing that. I've consulted Dr Google and it sounds very much like a cyst anyway. I think what I basically want to know is how much will the needle aspiration hurt?

Hi sgb, I've been recently diagnosed with bc BUT 9 out of 10 people who are referred to the breast clinic are fine- I was just unlucky. The odds of you being ok are high.

National guidelines mean all breast lumps are evaluated within 2 weeks-whether or not the GP thinks its suspicious-so if you are worried about the fact you'll be seen within a fortnight (ie more quickly than the wheels of the NHS usually turn!) then this is a standard.

Its a worrying time but I agree with krispy and humphrey the likelihood is that you'll be fine.

Hi Birdland. If you want others to natter with, nip over to Tamoxifen thread. Lots of us on there have been through BC. Some well past treatment (like me), others going through it now.

SGP, I still say odds are on your side. Even with a referral to a BC and an obvious lump you'd be v.unlucky to have BC, but if you end up being that unlucky, well there genuinely is life on the other side for the majority. Smile

I had one earlier this year - doc found it when I went for a medical for a visa to live overseas.
Refused to sign off on medical - phoned GP, saw GP same day - she said as it had been found I was now on a treadmill and they had to go through tests and procedures even if they thought it was nothing.
So, 6 days of worry later, had mammogram and ultrasound and told all OK.

So fingers crossed you will be fine.

Thanks Smee-I'll do that

BreconBeBuggered · 11/09/2012 14:21

I was worried about a lump because there is a family history of breast cancer. I got the standard 2-week appointment for a mammogram and everything was fine. Just lumpy.
Huh. They are sooo not lumpy. Cheek.

I found a lump at 17, the docs were pretty sure it was hormOnal as I was due on. Well my period didn't come but dd did. They then said it could be pregnancy hormone related and it may go away after. It didn't so had the needle thing (can barely remember it tbh) and was told it was a fibroidenoma (sp?) and isn't cancerous nor does it ever evolve into cancer and there was no reason to remove.

I did have it removed after my pregnancy with ds as it started growing and didn't stop so they decided it was best.

Good luck.

My mum's had three cysts and one mouse tumour removed over the last thirty years or so... wouldn't worry too much, OP, she was told breast cysts are pretty common.

Enjoy your holiday :)

Well the hospital rang this afternoon and I have an appointment in 10 days time so at least I won't have to wonder for too long. I will just try to keep busy rather than brood...

I had a horrid lump on my breast , hot , red and nasty .
GP thought it was a boil , and gave me antibiotics , and very sternly told me to come back if it didn't go .
It didn't go got loads of pus out though so had an ultrasound and mammogram , and 10 days or so later a quick op , with a local anaesthetic .
All gone , and nothing dodgy , just an infected blocked pore .

BadgersRetreat · 12/09/2012 18:15

i had a fibroadenoma removed at 19 and not had one since

but now (36 yo) am full of cysts - loads of them. I have regular ultrasounds and they keep an eye on them but never have they suggested trying to drain them

too many and too small i imagine

lumps are soooo common SGB - i bet yours is fine too.

Good news that you've got your appointment date. We are with you and thinking of you.
I was lucky as mine was a case of "saw GP Thurs", Clinic rang Fri, was seen Mon. But it was an awful weekend where I was terrified. Being seen so quickly made the fear worse I think. My GP was very serious too and didn't suggest "it'll be nothing" in any way, she also mentioned breast cancer Sad
But mine was a lumpy boob Grin and that's all it was Grin
So I'm sure you'll be fine.
