My dd (7) has to have her tonsils out next week after years of tonsillitis. She has to stay in overnight.
I have heard that she has to stay away from other children afterwards but no one has officially told me this. Hw long does she have to be in isolation for? And can she still see adults or does she have to stay away from everyone?
Thanks for your help.

I had my tonsils out at 17 and I don't think I was told that I had to stay away from anyone.

I did get a very bad infection after it by the way so watch out for that. Also it doesn't necessarily mean your dd will not get tonsilitis again as I have just had another bout of it. I think it depends on how much of the tonsils they manage to get out.

Thanks Mistymoo. I have heard they have to stay away from people to minimise the risk of infection. It would be nice if the hospital told me officially so I can plan the next few weeks!

HI Pepperpot

i had my tonsils out at 19 and wasn't told to stay away from any one, and thankfully didn't get an infection and haven't had a bout of it since and i'm now 23.

your DD will be fine, i think its don't come into contact with anyone who might have or has got a cold of somesort.

sorry if not much help :)

Had mine taken out at 17, wasnt told to stay away but i didnt want to see anyone anyway and my throat didnt hurt but my ears were killing me as it is all connected so she might complain about that.

It's 10-14 days as I recall. If you pick up a throat infection in that time, there's a risk of the scar rupturing and you lose a lot of blood & need emergency re-admission to hospital. This is rare but very frightening. It happened to someone I know & they ended up having a huge transfusion & spending about 5 days in intensive care - if they hadn't been close to the hospital they would probably have died (that was an extreme case, however, it's not usually that bad).
