I think I have Shingles?! Do I need to see GP or just crack on?

I have a couple of blisters come up on/in my ear, some pain in my ear, and nerve pain/tingling/skin soreness across my ear, cheek, around the eye, down the neck and oddly as far as into my left arm.

Eased by the fact that I have good pain meds for other reason, but there nevertheless.

I don't feel ill particularly, other than the way the weird facial pain makes me think I am going to have a migraine, but without it developing into one.

Is this shingles? do I need to see the gp? do i need to avoid people ? or can I just continue self medicating? how long is it infectious for? there are pregnant people at work, don't know if they are immune.

(i have had this before, several times, in my life, but never considered it to be shingles, until i read a little about it when the children got chicken pox, so not been to the docs about it for years, last time was when i was a teenager, had blisters on ear, told it was a virus. had not connected the face pain then).

Radio 2 recently had Dr Hilary Jones on talking about shingleshe also said about danger by the eyes, so definitely ask GP ( I fully understand listening to the radio does not qualify me to give medical advice but I wanted to reinforce what had been said by Caroleservice

val oh that would be nice. i am sure some tropical sun would reduce my stress levels and sort me out no end.

I have been quite stressed, and run-down due to a completely screwed up back, so that might explain it.

and, for some reason aciclovar rings a bell. not sure why, but i recognise the name, it trips of the tongue nice and easily. I wonder if i was given it when i was younger?

I am now getting itches elsewhere now. you know like when someone mentions fleas or nits, you start itching at the thought? like that!

Talking of which, can I spread it elsewhere on me? if i rub my eye after touching my ear, can that increase the risk of it spreading to my ear?

Not at all!

Aclovir is (I think) the main doodahwotsit in any cold sore remedy, hence why it seems familiar

Please dont worry about them being pissed off with you.i would bet money on at least one of them thanking you for being sensible about this (immunosuppressed, early pg etc)

Fuck everyone else. You are, quite frankly, proper infectious with sonething that can be very serious and ill-y-fying

PavlovtheCat · 30/08/2012 00:07

oh thats where i have heard it then. have cold sores periodically.

i love that word 'ill-y-fying'. great word. I am going to nick it.

I have actually had on the one hand A Very Good Day (just concluded it's Goodness and on the other A Very Bad Day.

I had decided instead of drinking the commiseration wine to wait for DH to get home from work at midnight. I have just spoken to him and one of his gaming friends is up and he is going round there to play grown up cars or something for an hour.

So, fuck him too, i shall commiserate/celebrate on my own/with you lot Wine

luckily my direct boss suffers from repeat shingles, so she will understand. she also has a disability, like i currently/recently have, so understands that. I never used to like her much. i now realise i am a lot like her Shock. And tbh all the rest are probably pissed off already.
