mouth ulcer misery

Just a moan really, I know all the little remedies to do for mouth ulcers but if anyones got a miracle cure I'd be grateful!

It's right on the end of my tongue and it hurts so much. I can't talk and have only eaten luke warm porridge for 4 days now. It's making me grumpy and I just want it to go.

Do not eat berries under any circumstances!
Take lysine supplements.
Worked for DP's hideous ulcers.

mignonette · 28/08/2012 15:37

Buy a bottle of Anbesol from the chemist. It contains local anaesthetic and is much better than Bonjela. I swear by it and I promise you, it will help.

See your dentist to check that your teeth edges aren't catching your tongue. Apthous Ulcers can be stress related and/or aggravated by poor sleep, low level ill health or being run down plus some vitamin and mineral deficiencies so maybe an MOT at the doctors?

Catsdontcare · 28/08/2012 15:41

I am tired and run down so I think that has caused it. Saw the dentist yesterday for general check up she was sympathetic but nothing she could offer.

I just want to go to bed and wail about how much it hurts (I normally have a high pain threshold but this is a real bitch)

Bit yucky but effective - cut open a clove of garlic and hold the cut side onto the ulcer for about a minute (after a few seconds it will sting a bit (i.e. you'll be going "uck, iss urts") but always works for me

mignonette · 28/08/2012 15:41

Please buy some Anbesol. It numbs it and gives relief.

Catsdontcare · 28/08/2012 15:43

I will go back the chemist once dh is home mignonette

Just wanted to sympathise. I have had a similar ulcer in the past and could barely eat or talk for a week. It was just the pits and I felt really miserable, and lost weight. I did get something from the doctor which helped heal it a bit more quickly, like a tablet you had to let dissolve on the area (I think) but mine was at the back/edge of the tongue so it wasn't too difficult to do that. I hope it passes soon.

Catsdontcare · 28/08/2012 15:45

Thank you for the sympathy i really don't think DH gets how much it hurts he's being kind but comment like "we can have sex we just won't kiss" makes me want to ulcerate his manhood.

Indigestion tablets are also quite handy for some immediate relief.
Put one next to the ulcer and just let it dissolve.
Feel for you, they are awfully painful.

gingeroots · 28/08/2012 15:52

second the Lysine supplements and DS found IGLU better than Anbesol .

wish you better soon .

( I've still not forgiven DP for rolling his eyes when I winced because I'd jarred my frozen shoulder during it's acute phase )

Cats

They are agonising arent' they? I used to get them all along the tongue edge from aged nine. I tried to fall sleep with my tongue poking out of my mouth to avoid catching them but like a burn, air on them made them hurt too.

Catsdontcare · 28/08/2012 16:15

dh is home early and is going to take the dc's out so I can lay on the sofa and moan and rock.

I used to get them really badly in my teen years but I haven't had one like this for years. I had forgotten just how awful they are.

Hi,
I don't know of any miracle cures sorry.
I've had multiple recurrent mouth ulcers since I was a little girl and have an average of 8 at a time. With my record being 16.
I get them every in my mouth, gums, sides, tongue, throat, tonsils etc.
I use liquid ambesol on them to numb them. It only lasts 5 minutes for me but helps me have a drink or bite to eat.

Goldrill · 31/08/2012 20:44

I had a miracle cure. Seriously.

I've had them on and off since teens and the past few years they were really bad, culminating in needing steroids to keep them under control, which didn't really work too well. Tried everything: clove oil, raw garlic, dentonox, anbesol, bonjela, bonjela once (should be illegal), iglu (big improvement on the other stuff). (If you get really fed up, try buying Kenalog in Orabase from online pharmacy in New Zealand - its the paste version of the steroid tabs you get over here)

Swapped to a toothpaste without Sodium Laureth Sulphate. Have had two very small ulcers since christmas. Really bloody wish I'd done it a bit sooner! Am sure it won't work for everyone as ulcers have so many causes, but it is seriously worth trying - within a few weeks you'll know whether it works or not and it won't take any actual effort. I think a couple of whitening toothpastes don't have it in; I use Corsodyl toothpaste now which is utterly vile but grows on you!

stoooooopidpigeon · 31/08/2012 20:50

I've never suffered with ulcers until I got pregnant with ds. He's now 4 months old and I've spent the best part of a year with my mouth filled with up to about 5 or 6 at a time. I'll have them really really agonisingly bad for a week and then they'll disappear, to be followed several weeks later by a fresh crop. Everyone's telling me I'm just run down which tbh I am but I am just miserable because of it. They're mostly along my front inside lip and my lips actually look like I've had bad fillers put in at the worst, they're so swollen. I've even cried in my more self indulgent moments. Interesting about the toothpaste, I'll certainly give that a try. Aside from that I don't know what to do really. I'm breastfeeding a constantly hungry baby and his sleep has just regressed in a big way. I'm not getting more than half hour snatches of sleep at a time with no real way to change that. Will a doctor actually do anything other than think I'm a whinger?

Goldrill · 31/08/2012 20:57

sorry - that should be sodium lauryl sulphate/sulfate. Pregnancy brain strikes again...

GravyHadALumpyMashBaby · 31/08/2012 21:04

Liquid TCP on a bit of cotton wool and dab it directly on the ulcer.

WARNING - Stings like hell for a couple of seconds but then numbs it, and then just repeat whenever you need relief. Mine are usually gone in a day or so.

Hope you're feeling better soon.

Kbear · 31/08/2012 21:05

I use IGLU - used to be Adcortyl when on prescription - thank god you can buy it over the counter now. creates a protective coating over the ulcer so you can eat and drink again.

Parisbanana · 31/08/2012 21:08

I second or third or whatever all the recommendations for IGLU.
Ds gets a lot of ulcers and after reading about IGLU on here, went and bought some, and his ulcers heal overnight. Expensive but worth it.

LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood · 31/08/2012 22:50

This is not a remedy really. I have suffered from mouth ulcers since I was a teenager. I am now 44 and they are much less frequent and also less severe. Anecdotally; they do get less with age. But also I found that taking folic acid helped me. When I was TTC and taking folic acid my mouth ulcers were far less severe.

gingeroots · 01/09/2012 09:40

And Lysine supplements .
