Should I have Private Health Insurance in the UK

Hi just sounding out for advice, recently changed jobs and previously had Private Health Insurance as part of benefit package; however, it is not provided by new employer. I am now wondering if it is something I shouldn't be without or is the NHS sufficient. I am not originally from the UK and where I come from Private Health Insurance is a must! Thanks

Most people in the UK just use the NHS and don't have private health insurance. Those that have it are usually working for multinational firms that provide it as a benefit, I don't think there are many people who pay for it themselves.

I would say, if you can afford it, get it.

We, like most people we know, have insurance through employment benefit packages. But I would pay for it privately if I had to as nhs waiting times are usually v long, nhs aftercare is not great - no comparison, really.

Only time I've paid private is for sports injury physio.

I usually use the NHS, but when it fails I use my insurance

I have claimed roughly what I have paid in over the years so yes I'ld say it was worth it, definitely!

Depends on your GP IMO, my current GP is great and I never have to pull the insurance card, my previous one was horrible and dismissive and wouldn't refer to anyone unless I did!

Benefits are there, you'll be seen faster, but you always have to pay for something like first consultation etc.
NHS is very good if you can afford a few weeks waiting time to see specialist....

I've never had it, even when working for a private hospital.

The actual treatment is the same, but you don't get put on waiting lists, have a private room and better food.

The private sector cannot deal with emergencies / trauma and if you do go to a private hospital check the staff's qualifications and whether there is a doctor on the premisis 24 hours a day.

I would always buy it, the difference in care is generally like night and day, you see who you want, when you want, where you want. No messing around with different registrars each appointment, you always see the consultant. Tests are usually done there and then and results given either immediately or within a day or so. No waiting lists, access to drugs often not available on the NHS not to mention privacy and a much nicer environment.

If you can afford it, buy it.

We have had private cover for over 25 years through DH's work and it's been a godsend.

It won't cover you for the really serious, chronic or emergency operations- think heart attack etc- but if you have nuisance/ quality of life illnesses and condiitons then you can be seen almost instantly, choose who you see, when you have the operation or treatment, and get more time at consultations.
