Why is my hip hurting so much? Please diagnose me.

I am 35 but when I get up from sitting I stagger like an 85year old.

Over the last few months my hip has started hurting. Not all the time, mostly if I've slept on that side or been sat with my legs crossed. Things is it is getting worse. Even if I only sit for a few minutes I can't get straight up because of the pain. I have to limp a few steps before the pain eases and I can walk again normally. It hurts so much.
Thing is I am hoping to return to work soon in a pre-school and that will require a lot of floor sitting and crouching which are both so painful at the moment.

Any ideas of experiences please.

Could be Bursitis which is a inflammation of the Bursa, a small pod protecting the hip.
I have had this for twelve months and at last have had a cortisone injection 100% relief.

aJumpedUpPantryBoy · 23/08/2012 16:29

I had a similar thing - my hip ached like mad in the morning, it would ease during the day but when I was still for a while it would hurt again.

I put up with it for ages, even bought a new matress and it made no difference.

Then I went to see my chiropractor (for a different problem) and mentioned it to him. He made some adjustments with my hip and warned me it would feel worse the next day.
It really hurt for about 3 days and since then I have had no pain at all. It's amazing.

I had just assumed it was a getting older-type thing that I had to put up with but I have now been 100% pain free for 3 months

Could it be your sacrum? Every now and again mine "goes" and the osteo clicks it back into position easily. It's a triangular bone at the base of the spine, and can click out of place by random twisting movements where your hips are still but the upper body turns, such as putting your seat belt on or grabbing loo roll! Dangerous stuff! There are times when, for me, it's a dull ache on certain movements, but last February, 5 days before going skiing, I leant forward to put on my knickers and felt a rip. Couldn't walk! Fortunately the osteo "cured" it and I was able to ski by the weekend.

Telesales what kind of pain did you have? Mine is a sharp sore pain and sometimes the skin feels tender too. It is on the outside of my body almost.

clam could be something with my back as that has not been good since I twisted it last year.

Yes exactly as you have described!

whyme2 · 24/08/2012 07:04

So I suppose the only way out is a trip to the G.P then? I always feel like I am wasting their time with whatever is wrong with me. Even when I was very poorly and was taken straight to hospital I felt like I slightly fraudulent.

Do go to the GP, you are not wasting their time. Ask for a referral to a hip surgeon who will be able to diagnose and treat you properly. Hope you improve soon.

narmada · 24/08/2012 22:40

Could be trochanteric bursitis -treatable with a corticosteroid/ anaesthetic injection at the GPs - sore joint and pain on outside of hip/ thigh were my syptoms.

whyme2 · 25/08/2012 07:00

I think I will have to give in and go, been tormenting me for ages now and seems to be getting worse. Hope they can sort it. So the injection is kind of like a magic cure?

< hopeful >

For me the jab got rid of all symptoms . So there is hope!

ladymariner · 26/08/2012 23:23

I have symptoms that sound nearly identical to yours Nd unfortunately, after a scan at the hospital, I've been diagnosed with the onset of osteoarthritis. Bugger Sad

whyme2 · 27/08/2012 07:44

Sorry to hear that lady Can I ask how old you are? < nosey >

Thing is I am secretly worried that I have some incurable thing because my DF has had lifelong problems with his hip (now rebuilt, plated and bolted). Silly head in the sand me.

I've had symptoms from pelvic mis-alignment/scoliosis for years, but last summer started with those intense, sharp pains on getting up/adjusting position and having to hobble when walking.
An x-ray found OA in the joint and I had physio. Several months of tedious stretching eased the worst of it, but it's still troublesome. I've just started seeing a sports therapist who says he can work on the mis-alignmwnt sonI'm hoping that helps.
Don't feel bad about seeing the doctor but don't be surprised if he tells you you've got OA and will have to take painkillers full stop.
You must try and get it sorted though.

whyme2 · 27/08/2012 09:58

I know I need to - especially if this job that I am after comes up because I will really struggle without some help otherwise. All that crouching and floor sitting is worrying me already and I haven't even had the interview yet!

I will try and get a GP appt this week. Hold me to it please.

Oh, I've just posted at length on another thread about Alexander technique - one about alternatives to pain meds with chronic pain. Pavlovthecat.

ladymariner · 27/08/2012 10:05

I'm 44 whyme , far too young to have anything wrong...........huh!

I find if I exercise it eases it a bit, but it seems to flare up for no particular reason, then go off again. I have to be careful though, as sudden jerky movements to the side can sometimes make it feel like someone has stuck a knife into the joint, not pleasant.

Takver · 27/08/2012 10:07

I had exactly the same - came on when I was pregnant, got so bad I could hardly walk at times. Also bursitis like the posters above, and again steroid injection worked absolute magic. (I also have some arthritis in the joint which means it is still quite stiff, but the bursitis is what caused the pain.)

You'll need a GP appointment the referral to a specialist.

Emandlu · 27/08/2012 10:07

I too have bursitis but in both my hips. It is horrible. I have had the injection and things are a little easier but it isn't better by a long way. Sad
I'm on long term painkillers for it.

Takver · 27/08/2012 10:09

ladymariner, it might be worth pushing a little for more investigation unless your arthritis is very bad & def causing the pain.

Initially that was the answer I got - but then I had a follow up referral after physio & the specialist told me that he wouldn't have expected so much pain from relatively early/minor arthritis. Result was the bursitis diagnosis & the injection which helped amazingly.

ladymariner · 27/08/2012 11:15

Thankyou Takver, I'll look into that. I've never heard of bursitis, tbh, so that's really helpful xx

StiffyByng · 28/08/2012 20:54

I had awful hip pain in pregnancy that got better but remained after the birth. My physio referred me to the ortho people abs an MRI has revealed a hip impingement (which is when the socket rubs) and bursitis as a result, along with I guess the start of arthritis. Annoyingly I feel the pain in my knee too. The steroid injection didn't do a huge amount, and I'm about to have an injection of local anaesthetic and fluid under a general. I've been told I will need a hip replacement at some point though. Quite gutting at 35.

I've put on loads of weight through (partly) being unable to do much exercise, and I've been roundly told off for that, but also told I can't do any high impact exercise or swim breaststroke (my only decent stroke) so the whole thing is a giant PITA.
