Ugh,I had this when dd1 was about 8 months old.I picked her up & nearly fell over.I had to hang on to the furniture to get my balance.I was prescribed stemetil, and had attacks for some time afterwards.

My Dr was going to refer me to the ENT clinic for the Epley manouvre, but I didn't need it in the end.It went away of its own accord & I've been ok since.

mirage-sounds like you had a nasty dose of benign posistional vertigo, but it quite often does right itself as the crystals dissolve.

JennyLee · 13/03/2006 23:49

one doc mentioned e.n.t the first 2 times i got it but the bozos i saw after that were useless and stemetil and the other stuff never really helped me

spacecadet · 14/03/2006 12:28

jennylee-ent consultant dont usually understand dizziness, you need to see a neurotologist(dizzy doctor)
there are 2 excellent balance centres in the uk, one is in leicester and the other in london.

runnerbean- i would recommend while you are recovering, stick to a low salt diet and try to avoid excess caffeine etc.

Thanks for the information spacecadet

Thanks again spacecadet. I went back to my doctor this morning and she has referred me to ENT. I feel like the world is constantly wobbling at the moment and I've lost about half a stone in the last 4 weeks due to loss of appetite!
The tinnitus seems to be my biggest problem though, has anyone else had this with it as well?
My friend got me a 'pillow speaker' so I can go to sleep listening to music which has helped. Some days it is louder than others and I think caffeine may be the link.
I've been prescribed prochloperazine.

I've had to pull out of my salsa class again and I'm feeling really fed up! Sad

My tinnitus seems to be getting worse, could it be these prochloporazine??
God knows how long I'll wait to see a specialist.
Feeling very tearful today. Sad

Dh has rotten cold and I wont let him come near me I'm terrified of getting another infection!!

runnerbean-glad you have a referral, do keep chasing it up if it seems to be taking a while.
tinnitus is not uncommon with labs/neuronitis, i would advise that you asl your gp for betahistine tablets with are can help with some of the balance issues and also the tinnitus, its primarily used in menieres desease but dont be alarmed by that.
dont take prochlorpherizine/stemetil, its not all that good and shouldnt be taken for more than a few days. ask your gp for cinnarizine, but only take it when the dizziness is unbearable, it will give you some relief. feel free to email me if you want any more info

Can I buy betahistine from the chemist or does it have to be prescribed?
I'm concerned that it advises you not to drive while taking this prochlopherezine, I have to use my car most days.

you need to get betahistine on prescription, stemetil can make you drowsy, hence the warning, cinnarizine is a better alternative, or you can buy cinnarizine over the counter as sturgeron.

i have menieres about 4 YEARS NOW, IT STARTED WITH TINNITUS, IT IS DOING MY HEAD IN, LOSS OF BALANCE, CANNOT TURN HEAD QUICKLY, THE PRESSURE IN SIDE THE HEAD IS UNBEARABLE, I HAVE IT BAD TO DAY, HOLDING NOSE TO CLEAR HEAD ONLY WORKS FOR A FEW MINUTES. I HAD THE EPLEY MANOUVER DONE BY NEUROTOLOGIST, NOTHING, HE JUST TOLD ME TO LEARN TO LIVE WITH IT,I FEEL LIKE I AM GOING MAD SOMETIMES, NO ONE WHO DOES NOT HAVE IT JUST WOULD NEVER UNDERSTAND, I TELL NO ONE DONT WANT PEOPLE TO THINK I AM UNWELL. DO NOT GET MUCH SICK FEELING WITH IT JUST OFF BALANCE, I WOULD NOT WISH IT ON MY WORST ENEMY. EVEN SOMETHING MOVING IN MY VISION IN THE BACKGROUND CAN TRIGGER IT, ALSO FLASHING LIGHTS ON VIDEO HITS. I AM IN AUSTRALIA.

I've had it too - the first time I had it it came on really suddenly & I went from a fully functioning 34 yr old to somebody who had to nearly crawl for the bus because all of a sudden I couldnt walk without feeling like I'd downed about 20 pints. I remember queuing in the bank & really panicking that I couldnt walk to the cashier. GP prescribed me some travel sickness tablets. I've had it a couple of times since but nowhere near as bad as the first time. I felt a bit like I imagine what its like to be moonwalking if that makes sense.
