Can I keep baby with me whilst in hospital?

Hello after some advice. Have a long history Of kidney infections and was admitted to hospital whilst pregnant with an abscess on my left kidney. They held it at bay throughout my pregnancy with daily antibiotics but now I've delivered the baby all my symptoms have flared up again. I have been on antibiotics for 48 but am actually feeling worse. Have been advised to go to A&E by NHS direct but am reluctant to do so as I have a breast fed 6 week old baby. Does anyone know if he will be allowed to stay with me should I need to go in?

I worked on a medical ward and a lady had her young baby with her in a side room. Hope you feel better soon

When my dad was in hospital earlier this year there was a lady in the room next to him that had her baby with her, this was in Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.

Dont think it would be a problem as long as they have a cot, space etc

If you need to go to A&E then go, they will give you the options there and you can negotiate as required.

For what it is worth then in my local hospital you would be able to have your baby as they have a breastfeeding friendly policy, this may not apply to all of them but hopefully common sense will help.

They need to make a plan for you. I went in when DD2 was tiny and they put me in a side room on the postnatal ward so we had all we needed for her and things like the kitchen and facilities to bath/shower with her being safe (They re-tagged her like when she was first born.)

I think it depends as long as you are well enough to independently care for baby if you are admitted to a general medical ward and they are able to find a side room.

You would have to speak to nurse in charge to allow them to look at options.
I have known this to happen.

I went in with gallstones when dd2 was 3 weeks old. I was allowed to keep her with me in side room the first stay of two days. However when I was readmitted and was very sick with pancreatitis and kidney failure I was not allowed. Sad I would check also as I know drugs I was on wouldn't be acceptable to breast feed on, I spent three weeks in but pumped and dumped the whole time to keep milk going, and restarted once home.

Yes you should be allowed to. Hope you feel better.

I did they can make arrangements. They won't separate a mother & baby at that age.
