Ds woke up with about 4 spots on his forehead which looked a bit like flat pimples with white heads and flushed cheeks. He has been a little under the weather for a couple of weeks with snuffles and a cough so thought maybe a virus. Took him to preschool and they thought he may have had some mozzie bites. This evening there was another spot on his head, one behind his ear, one on the back of his neck and a red patch on his torso. One of the ones on his head had started to weap and crust. They dont seem to be itchy at all or at least he hasnt been scratching. He is almost 18mths old, a bit grumpier and tireder than usual.

Any ideas, this is a big week at work for both dh and I and I am really hoping it is just post viral and he wont have to stay home with the pox or similar. TIA

only one has done the weep and crust thing, the others have had no change, could it be something else and he has just knocked the head off the one? she says pleadingly and do the flushed cheeks fit in? it could just be a virus couldnt it? pleeeaaase

that's the pox allright

delgate your work load and call the boss to tell them you'll be off for a few days. Although techinically patients are not contagious once the spots have appeared, it's two or three days before. Very clever, you see, the chicken pox.

come come now, don't be like that
once they've had it they never get it again

raggedyanna · 13/03/2006 08:06

thanks but it really is the most rotten timing ever, last week there was nothing on at all he could have been poxed to the max and either one of us or both could have nursed him lovingly back to health but this week arrrggghhhh!!!!! and there is no one to delegate to for my area!!!!!

btw remind me, bicarb soda in bath, how much and can I put oats in bath if he is gluten free (ie can the gluten actually be absorbed or does it have to be ingested to be a problem) would aloe vera help? he is not really scratchy or anything and there are only the few spots so far but I know it can get worse so should be prepared.
thanks

dunno about the bi-carb, but yes to the oats. Put them in a sock and hold under the running tap.

Good old calomine too for when they get bad.

Sugarmag · 13/03/2006 13:14

BTW - not true that they are not contagious once all the spots have appeared. They are contagious until every last spot has crusted over.

EURAX cream is absolutely brilliant for chicken-pox---aslong as not allergic!
