Hair loss - anyone experienced this too ?

Apologies if this is the wrong thread but Children's Health seemed to cover younger children. My DD aged 12 has lost about half her hair over the last 12 months. It has been gradual but consistent and washing/brushing always results in anything between a Lindor - FerreroRocher size ball of hair falling out. She also has constant dandruff. Does dandruff make your hair fall out ? Her hair used to be thick ringlets but now they are straggly curls. She doesn't want to go to Dr for fear of blood test (that's what they said last year). What have you done when your dc was fearful of blood test ? This does bother her but I think it bothers me more. Anyone had experience of this and what happened ?

I'm going through this at the moment with my ds, he's 5yrs. His hairloss has been gradual but in patches rather than all over.we went to the gp and he checked that it wasn't anything fungal which it wasn't so he sent him for a blood test. The dr pescribed a cream which numbs the area that they take the blood from,i didnt have a problem taking him for the test as he's still young and has speech and language impairment so didnt really know what it was all about.I have had to take my older dd for tests before and she did put up a fight about it.I had to use alot of encouragement and bribery, it involved a day out with a friend (expensive blood test i know) but eventually got her to go for the test.Anyway back to the hair loss, the tests came back normal so the dr has reffered my ds to a pead and we have an appointment in sept so still trying to find out why he's losing his hair.

Poor little chap, I hope that your Sept appointment brings you some answers. I will ask GP about numbing cream. Bribery is a good option but agree, it will be very expensive.

My ds2 who is 3 years old just had a blood test last week and they used a cold numbing spray as well as the cream . He made the tiniest wimper when they did it and he told his big brother if was ok . Hope your dc gets the problem sorted .

They should give your dd the numbing cream especially if she is very frightened of having the test.I don't know how things work where you are,but our pathology department were great they booked her an appointment rather than turning up and waiting and the staff were very helpful and made her feel at ease. Good luck and I hope you manage to get some awnsers too.
