agree with budababe . At very least ask the dr where you could get some asap and if you need a prescription, they can be very effective it these situations.

Definately paracetomol suppostiroies. Call chemist first to check they have them as some don't. But be prepred - They are £20+ for 10!

hope gp calls soon - you should be high priority. have you tried the wet flannel? it should be tepid, not cold.

DelGirl · 12/03/2006 20:10

haven't read the whole thread but nhs direct advised me only to use a coldish flannel on the wrist/pulse point and temples and not on the body. hth

45 mins after giving her the paracetamol suppository her temp finally came down to 38.5, its creaping back up again so will give her some more at 10pm, hoping it continues to work

we have to use suppositories for DD2 katzg as she won't swallow calpol. They are fantastic! Could you try her with some nurofen now that her temp is more under control?

katzg · 12/03/2006 21:00

she threw that up to!

Have you tried putting some calpol or medised in a beaker or bottle of water/juice/milk? My dd kept throwing calpol up but she would take sips of diluted juice with the calpol in it. Try to make sure the water isn't too cold as it can upset their tummy. dd has had a temp all day too and she has infected excema on her back so am now paranoid that it's something much worse! Also, a homeopathic remedy for fever is Belladona, can be bought at Boots. My daughter takes them quite easily, they are tiny little tablets that dissolve in the mouth or again can be put in water.

Chapsmum · 12/03/2006 21:14

Sorry for interuption but the best thing to do is stick to the suppositories. then put a clean (very clean after where they've hjust been!) finger into her dose of nuerofen and rub it into her gums. Continue untill it is all gone. A wee ones mouth is very vascular and they can absorb a great deal from it. Then small sips of water. 10 mls every 10 mins really slowly. then see how you get on!

HTH

katzg · 12/03/2006 21:17

thanks again

the suppositories have done the trick and have been advised to stear clear of nurofen now because we have a family history of intolerence to it and this might be why she throws it up!

she seemed much improved after about an hour but now she hot again now and can't have next dose for about 30-45mins, DH is giving her a cuddle

shes also breast feeding fine so not worried about fluid intake, although i think i have mastitis at the mo, well one red and sore boob, so its fun in the katz household today!

Whilst belladonna is palliative in most fevers, it usually works best on those where the patient is really burning red, and very angry, sensitive and tearful.

For fevers where the patient is listless and wants to be held gelsemium is usually a better bet, especially if the onset has been quite slow, and there is no thirst present

ruty · 12/03/2006 21:58

hope she's better in the morning.

katzg · 12/03/2006 22:05

she's being sick now! poor little mite. just given her another suppository temp high again (39.8) will watch and see if it drops again.

GP's tomorrow i think
