My child won't stop eating, does anyone have a medical explanation, or is she just a greedy madam?

I have almost 6 year old dt's. Both identical, in looks, height and weight. However dt2 does not stop eating and drinking so much so that others are now passing comment. Yesterday she went to a party and when I collected, the mum remarked on how she had eaten all her dinner, and get this four hamburgers on top. We eat very healthily at home, there is literally no dinner that she won't eat, which is great, however the sheer volume of food that she can consume is a worry. Obviously most dinners there is a limit, I don't just endlessly feed her, but she would carry on if she could. Anyone know of any medical conditions etc that can cause this, my mil thinks worms but that is an old wives tale surely? TIA

Happymumoftwo, she eats loads of fruit and healthy stuff so am not too worried about the content just the sheer volume. Glad someone else has been through this too, just find it wierd that she east soooo much more than her sister but is identical weight and build, good thing or bad??

I don't know, but ds is very slim and was eating loads. I suppose kids just vary in their appetites?

I would think if she had something like Prada Willi syndrome, there would be other signs too.

mykidsmum · 11/03/2006 22:17

Maybe she just likes food, just like me Smile

hi i've worked with several people with pws (in care) and agree you would know, as it causes learning disabiltlies and behavioural problems as well. Usually picked up when your a baby. Also poeple with pws have a certain look like people with down syndrome have a certain look.
Have you thought about thyroid. Saying this my dd2 did this last year and i got really worried and then she just had a huge growth spurt so proberbly just that.

mykidsmum · 11/03/2006 22:20

Carol3 it really could just be a growth spurt, actually I did notice that their uniforms were looking a bit short the other day. Will measure tomorrow and probably take her to the docs just to check thyroid, diabtetes etc

mykidsmum. I was almost posting the same thing about my Ds1. He's goes on exactly like your Ds, and i am at the end of my tether with the amount of food he eats. Like your Ds, if he doesn't get something to eat he whines until he does.
He is almost 8, but is very tall, he wears clothes for a 10yr old, and is very skinny. We eat healthily as a family, but there is just no filling him. Our weekly food bill have gone up, and i spend around £20 at weekends on top up shops, most of which he eats.I have mentioned it to the doctor but just get told that he is growing, but he can't surely be growing all the time! Sorry to hijack your thread, i have been reading through to see what people suggest.

Hi Saltire, glad to know I'm not alone. Am getting my dd an appointment at the drs this week, just to check thyroid, diabetes etc. I'm sure its probably just a big appetite but I want to get it checked for my piece of mind, have you considered any checks?

He's never been tested for diabetes, although i have asked as there is a family history of it, however he has no other symptoms. I really don't think he has PWS, he is very skinny, almost has the look of someone undernoursihed at times.
I have had a look to see if there are worms there nad i can't see anything, plus i thought that he would be itchy down there and he isn't.

mykidsmum, does your Dd eat really quickly? My ds does, he shovels as opposed to eats. I can set his and his brothers plates of dinner down in front of them and go back to teh kitchen to get mine and Dh, and when i come back through, Ds1 has almost finished. He always asks for more, and he gets a big portion.

I have a 8.5yr old girl who I can't fill she's always looking food
She's very active

But here is the best part
Her school took me in yesterday to say they was worried I wasn't feeding her and had spoken to gateway? I'm guessing that's school social services? On what they should do?
She eats so much at school they said? I'm like she eats so much at home too?

She had worms few months ago and I got her treated I'm going today to get more as it's the only thing I can think of it can't b a growth spirt she's tall and in age 9-10 for 8-9 tops r short on her arms etc

There are other genetic issues that can cause similar to prada-willi. My daughter has one such genetic problem (16p11.2 deletion) however in her case she does not thankfully have the eating issue that many others with the same genetic deletion do have. As with many things it can be expressed differently between individuals so it may be possible for identical twins to have the same genetic issue but not have the same symptoms. Of course she may have a high metabolic rate, be more active than her twin and her appetite just keep up with her calorie burn rate. As suggested already a full GP check would be a good idea and see from there.

The only PW child I know was diagnosed at birth and has other difficulties than over eating. Your child would be diagnosed at birth.
