Going through a difficult time atm with uncertainty about my unborn baby's health.

Even though it might be clutching at straws it would cheer me up to hear stories about how doctors can get things wrong. So please indulge me! Anything - pregnancy-related or not - welcome!

emkana,I've seen your thread and am so sorry.
My sister had a very worrying time when p/g.Was told her baby had a chromosomal abnormality and kidney problems.

Bugger all wrong with him-is now a strapping 2 year old.

Elf1981 · 10/03/2006 21:07

Not pregnancy related, but docs asked whether my gran was catholic when she had a stroke 25 years ago as they didn't think she would last night night and wanted to give her the last rites.
25 years on, she's still around!

I have been reading your other threads by the way but never felt like I could say anything useful. I have my fingers crossed for you.

chapsmum · 10/03/2006 21:07

Emkana, how horrid for you.

my mum was told I had downs, I dont.

xxxx

ScummyMummy · 10/03/2006 21:10

Kidney problem spotted in my Joe was a red herring.
And my GP told me my eczema was acne!

buffythenappyslayer · 10/03/2006 21:10

when i was pg with number 3,they told me taht she was small for dates and her kidneys werent functioning properly.i got myself in such a state for the rest of my pregnancy.dd was born 4 weeks early, and i expected this extremely tiny baby.oh no!at 36 weeks,my beautiful dd weighed 7lb 12oz!and there were no problems at all with her kidneys.when i was in labour with number 4,i had really bad pains in my side.i kept telling them taht something was wrong, but the doctor kept telling me there wasnt.after being like it for a couple of hours, another doctor acme and i was rushed into theatre for an emergency c-section.the pain i had had was the placenta coming away.
my experiences have shown that they do get things wrong.
hope your baby is ok!!xxx

Pruni · 10/03/2006 21:12

This doesn't relate to your problem but my grandmother wasbeing operated on for bowel cancer, a complication of Crohn's.

They cut an artery accidentally, couldn't stop the bleeding, airlifted her to a bigger hospital, where she was in and out of a coma for the next six months and lost her stomach muscles due to flesh-eating bug. She is miraculously still alive.

She didn't even sue!

WickedViperWitch · 10/03/2006 21:14

Consultant told me ds was going to be VERY small and I was to forget about my home birth. Ds was 7lb 1oz so he was wrong, how the midwives crowed.

Blandmum · 10/03/2006 21:16

I had endless scans are the were worried ds was going to be too small. He was a whopping 9 2 , two weeks early

emkana · 10/03/2006 21:28

Any more?

My doctor said I wasn't really allergic to erythromycin and to have another antibiotic in the same family because I "would be fine". Half hour after taking the first tablet I couldn't move from the bathroom from the waves of nausea and vomiting. So then he gave me another antibiotic - which had dire warnings plastered all over it not to be taken by penicillin allergy sufferers (which I am) again telling me I'd be fine (I didn't take it and went the homeopathy route instead).

Then there was the doctor who said "oh, you had the chickenpox vaccination you'll be immune" but I insisted on the immunity test and I wasn't.

And all the doctors who missed my obstetric cholestasis in my first pregnancy...

... (I don't trust doctors much anymore, can you tell?)

WickedViperWitch · 10/03/2006 21:37

er, thimerosil? You know, mercury, injected into babies. Which is apparently safe but they've withdrawn, just in case. I know it's not one dr but still.

puddytats · 10/03/2006 21:38

I was told had a complete miscarriage. 7 months later gave birth to a healthy baby girl

lacrimosa · 10/03/2006 21:41

I was told at 11 after being through lots of horrid tests and ops that I would never have children I was told when I was pregnant with ds that he would be 99% chance brain damaged and physically disabled [he is at mainstream school and doing great!] and told the same with dd and there are no problems whatsoever!Smile keep your chin up, I understand life does not always treat you well but things can go ok x I hope everything goes well for you x

starlover · 10/03/2006 21:43

we have such a fake doctor at my old surgery... no-one ever wants to see him, onyl one you can get a same day appt with!

he told a lady that she was pregnant. She had a stomach ulcer

he told someone i babysat for that he could give separate mmr jabs if they bought them over from france.. it's illegal!

he told me my tonsils looked fine and that antibiotics wouldn't help my throat infection. I had my tonsils out when I was 8!!!!!!!!

Chapsmum · 10/03/2006 21:46

WVW surely not the time or the thread to open that can of worms?! It is not exactly a re-assuring comment now is it?

lacrimosa · 10/03/2006 21:46

ROFL at 'tonsils out!'

RedTartanLass · 10/03/2006 21:59

PML at starlover's doctor, but actually it's quite scary he's still practisingShock

bluejelly · 10/03/2006 22:16

They told me my baby was breech, she wasn't. Said she was so big they would have to induce me. She was totally normal eight pounder.
They do get it wrong sometimes!

Elf1981 · 10/03/2006 22:18

Starlover - in some cases tonsils grow back!!

Emkana - my gran was told she would never have kids, she went on to have six!!

expatinscotland · 10/03/2006 22:19

they told me to go home and miscarry dd1 after i started bleeding in the 8th week.

she'll be three in june!

GDG · 10/03/2006 22:23

Boyfriend of 5 yrs became unwell at university, 6 months of backwards and forwards being told it's a virus, glandular fever etc - eventually found out it was Hodgkin's lymphoma.

Ds1 - just last month, ill again - backwards and forwards to GP - he's fine, just a virus, chest is clear - took him to A&E and he has pneumonia, straight on to oxygen and IV antibiotics, hospitalised for 4 days

Nan fell off small step ladder, taken to A&E, X-rayed - she's fine they say, get her walking on it asap - 2 weeks later they look at x-ray again adn recall her - she's fractured her thigh so she's in for an op and in plaster for 8 weeks

I have a car crash at 3 months pg - wrist really painful - taken to A&E - you're alright they say - off you go. So much pain over night, go back to different A&E next morning - it's smashed - plaster for 6 weeks and still ongoing problems 5 years later

Pg with ds3 - constantly told I looked small and was sent for growth scans - he was 8lb 10oz

Shall I go on? Don't trust doctors that much I have to say!

Not seen your other thread emkana so not aware of your issue but I hope all is well for you in the end.

yummimummy · 10/03/2006 22:24

Starlover: Healthy, non inflamed tonsils in an adult are not visible in the throat. So saying that they looked ok just meant he couldn't see them and they weren't enlarged and full of puss. And that you didn't have an infection that required antibiotics. That one is ok in my book.

picnikel · 10/03/2006 22:24

Blush Starlover, I said that to someone once , was so humiliated but in my defense sometimes the ENT chaps leave bits behind - finesse is not a feature of a tonsillectomy....

Still felt like Crapdoc though, Blush!!!

yummimummy · 10/03/2006 22:25

Sorry, make that pus.
I don't think having a cat sitting on your tonsils would probably require more than a course of antibiotics!

colditz · 10/03/2006 22:27

"No, Ms Colditz, you are definately not pregnant, I would be able to tell. I will book you in for blood tests to check your thyroid function, that could be why you haven't had your period."

Due in 4 weeks.
