Stress fractures

Last year I got a stress fracture in my fourth metatarsal, left foot. I have no idea really why it happened and I was in a 'moon boot' for about three months. Then yesterday exactly the same has happened to my right foot and I'm going to the hospital tomorrow. Anybody know of any reasons why this should have happened twice in one year?!

What age are you? You should be tested for osteoporosis. Do you do alot of running?

dinglydell · 14/08/2012 02:52

I'm 45. I don't run at all but I do walk a lot.

I think you will be tested for osteoporosis, to check the density of your bones. Mind you it might depend on your area. It's called a Dexa scan.

I think I had one actually last year and it showed that I didn't have osteoporosis but something close to it, I can't remember what it's called.

Was it Pagets (although I doubt it). It's good that you dont have osteoporosis.

Have they put you on any treatment? Have you taken steroids long term as they can cause loss of bone density.

They didn't mention Pagets. It was osteopenia they said I had. I was just googling it. The woman at the fracture clinic recommended I had further blood tests in six months as I had very very low vitamin D although she wasn't sure if that was connected. But of course I didn't bother getting that done because everything seemed to go back to normal.

I haven't taken steroids but I do wonder if it's due to the fact I was very severely anorexic when I was a teenager / through my twenties and ate very little. I'm completely over that now and a normal weight if not a bit overweight. But I do wonder if that might have caused a long-term problem with my bones.

Sorry to hear that, but well done for getting over it. It may well have something to do with it. Bone density is measured on a scale. Osteopenia is not as bad as osteoporosis but means that your bone density is lower than it should be. This is probably why you have stress fractures. The hospital should keep an eye on you (sounds like they are). Have they told you to up calcium intake etc.

No, I should have followed it up - I will now though.

Don't you need Vit D to be able to absorb calcium ?
