Too much vitamin A?

MrsNouveauRichards · 12/08/2012 17:12

I have started using MyFitnessPal, and have found it really interesting to see how 'good' (or otherwise) my diet is.

One thing is that it keeps saying I am over on my vitamin A RDA, not by a little, but by over 2-600%!

Am I right in that vitamin A is one you really don't want too much of? Can't seem to find any useful info.
I'm not even sure how it is so high Confused

Too much vit A is a problem - but if it is counting carotene I wouldn't worry. It's the precursor for Vit A, but you can excrete it just fine.

Thank you.

Today I have eaten:
Porridge with blueberries, ground flaxseed, honey and splash of whole milk. Strawberry and banana smoothie.

Baked beans on a slice of wholegrain toast. Cup of tea. Water.

Icecream and a small piece of flapjack.

BBQ pulled pork, mashed sweet potato, courgette and cabbage. Banana.

Somehow that is 680% of my RDA of vit A Confused

Just been looking into it a bit more, and it seems the sweet potato was where all the vit A came from Confused does that mean it is carotene?

Yes - it is beta carotene. It's fine.

And if a normal portion of sweet potato comes up as 680% of RDA for Vit A, I think that the wrong value must have been fed into the programme - 100 g of sweet potato should provide around 89% of your RDA for Vit A in the form of beta carotene.

Thank you so much. Now I know it is wrong I can stop looking at it! But I kept thinking WTF! :o
