Migraines in Children

DD aged 8 came home on Tuesday complaining of a severe headache. To the point where she was clingy and crying. she also complained of being able to smell toast even though none was being cooked.

After about an hour and a half she was sick. She lay down for a while and then felt much better, but still had a dull headache the next day.

This follows similar pattern to my migraines, but would an 8 year old get one?

Had similar thing with DS1 (7) a couple of months ago.

Came home from school complaining of awful headache, vomited, nose bleed, saying he couldn't move as head hurt so much.

Had him checked out at minor injuries as he was photophobic and I was worried about meningitis.

Nurse was fantastic, couldn't find anything untoward other than high temp but she did ask if there was family history of migraines.

Like your DD after a nights sleep he was fully recovered, I think it was a migraine, just waiting now and hoping it doesn't become a regular thing!

I've been having migraines since I was 5 -sorry

but much less worrying than thinking it might be something more sinister

i can remember having them as a child - not that often, but generally triggered by the sun. Still have occasional ones as an adult.

Fortunately DD didn't have a temperature and when she was sick it didn't smell IYKWIM.

She was only sick once and managed a toasted bagel and philly about two hours after being sick. So I'm pretty sure it's not a bug.

She had her eyes tested a week ago and needs stronger reading glasses. She said they had been running around at holiday club and it does get warm as its on the top floor of a converted church.

Who knows? I'll just keep a close eye on the situation.

DS had migraines when he was 8+. We noticed that they happened mostly at weekends and during school holidays. The problem was that he needed to eat at the same times each day (i.e. no eating later during a holiday etc). If he did not he could develop a migraine. If we were out and going to eat later than usual I would always have a snack in my bag to make sure he did not go too long between meals. He grew out of this after a few years.

Some suggestions as to triggers here (scroll down to What are some migraine triggers

Girls could possibly be pre pre menstrual IYSWIM??

My DD has been diagnosed with migraines since age of 5 and is now 7 Sad she is unable to take the strength of tablets she needs as she is too young.

I find giving her Calpol fast melts, glass of water, cool bedroom (windows open & fan on) and good couple of hrs sleep helps. If I can't get the calpol into her quickly she ends up vomiting several times Sad

Please get her checked out by a doctor.

Inyourhippyhat, thanks - school holidays = irregular eating and on Tuesday she was at a local nursery that runs a holiday club. She been there several times before. they had veggie curry for lunch, but she didn't eat tea, she said because of the headache, but maybe not eating was part of the trigger.

My DS has been suffering with migraines since he was 3 - he was 6 before we connected all the symptoms together though..... Chiropractic treatment to his neck has made a vast improvement to his both the frequency and severity of his migraines - in fact the last one he had he wasn't sick! First time and he is now 13.....
