My dh was diagnosed type 2 diabetic almost 2 years ago, after displaying all the symptoms he got tested and a blood reading of 23. He was put on 2 daily tablets of metformin in the beginning he took these but then started forgetting, he then discovered that as he was losing weight the symptoms were going away without meds, he refused to go for eye check ups and clinic appointments almost in denial. Since diagnosis he has lost 10 stone in weight (he was msssively overweight) mainly by simply being diabetic i believe rather than anything else, i managed to force him to one diabetic appointment where his sugars were at 17 and he was put on more meds 3 metformin daily and 1 glicazide. He started taking these but immediatly felt very unwell, stomach pain, nausea etc so he stopped taking them now i cant get him to take his meds or attend appointments or do anything about his diet he eats sweets and biscuits etc daily, sugar in coffees he even drinks energy drinks! hes just pretending its not happening, im really concerned, hes started being very thirsty and using the loo alot again but ignore it, how can i get through to him :(

Heavens above! I'm not sure what advice I can give but I didn't want to read and not reply. Is it perhaps a deal breaker, would an ultimatum work?
My dh is type 2, has been for approx 10 years and I have problems with him not taking the necessary lifestyle changes seriously but he does take meds (in ever increasing amounts).
Your dh's reaction is v like that of a teenager who are notoriously bad at controlling their diabetes, maybe you could research what advise is available to parents of teenagers ( even though you are not his mother!), it is incredibly frustrating I know - could he also be enjoying the weight loss without having to try a bit too much?
Good luck

Remind him of what will happen if he doesn't get his blood glucose under control - be harsh and tell him that you don't want him to have a stroke, heart attack, go blind, go into kidney failure or have his legs amputated. Because thats what happens if he's running his glucose at 20 all the time - and it doesn't take very long, and you don't get any warning either.

If thats not what he wants, then he needs to get to the GP and take responsibility for his diabetes.

Hi Cantgetthrough.
I feel your pain, I really do.
My DH is type 1 diabetic and his attitude sounds very similar to your DH.
After being very poorly controlled almost as long as we have been together (10 years)
He was diagnosed at 8 years old, and was very well controlled until about aged 18 I would say.

What we are looking at now is;
He is 26 years old, and his poor control has made him infertile, he is losing his sight in both eyes & has lost feeling in his toes and a couple of fingers.
We will need IVF to have children (something we both desperately want) but have been told that the NHS will not fund it as he has made no effort with his own health and has made himself infertile.

He has only recently started to step up with it a bit. He went on a DAFNE course recently which really helped.

Although we got into a bit of an argument a few weeks ago. He basically came out and said (in anger) that the only reason he was making an effort with the diabetes was for me, and if he was on his own he wouldn't be bothered and would have just carried on destroying himself.
That really hurt me that he doesn't want to get better for himself :-(

Feel free to PM me if you want a chat about someone in a fairly similar boat. x

thank you all, yes i do feel like his mother at times and hes nearly 30!, i have tried telling him about all the risks but its like he thinks it wont happen to him i think he thinks hes too young for anything serious to happen i really dont understand it. Yes he has enjoyed the easy weight loss hes now within normal limits and only wants to lose a little more he always says he will restart meds in x time but never does. He wont go back to the clinic because a - hes not taking his meds and he says they said he needs to be on them for 3 months before they can get an accurate reading and b - he says the nurse he seen last wasnt very nice and when he told her about his weight loss made jibes about how he still had weight to lose so he dosnt want to see her again, just silly really
