can you catch shingles from someone with shingles, if you haven't had chicken pox? (Did that make sense Wink)

you can only get shingles if you already have had chickenpox. i gave my dd1 chickenpox when i had a single (yes just one!) and they ravaged through the nursery (where do you live btw, i'm desperate for dd2 to get chickenpox)

Shingles is passed on by direct contact, and it can be passed on to someone who has already had chickenpox. It can also cause chickenpox in someone who hasn't already had it.

I've had shingles, you can catch chicken pox if you haven't had it, although my children or dh didn't catch it. To get shingles you must have had chicken pox in your life time. The virus lays dormant in your body and when run down shown itself again as shinges affecting the nervous system, explaining why you get it on different parts on the body like waste, face or leg. mine was just on the leg. larsxx

I was told that you can't give shingles but you can give chicken pox, so it likes any virus I suppose you can, but like i said my family didn't get it. Kids got chicken pox 2 years later.

Just by contact, tilly. It's not easily passed on, but close contact can do it (if the fluid from the blisters comes into contact with your skin or eyes).
