Mosquito bites

... how long before they go?

Only DD has one and it's got a bit bigger (think she must have scratched it) but she says it doesn't hurt/itch anymore, so should I let the GP see it or am I just worrying over nothing -again--.

Have you got a good pharmacist near you? The one near us is fab for small things like that. I've often taken my daughter in for rashes and been reassured!

MrsWembley · 07/08/2012 09:46

Well, we've a pharmacist, though I've never had to ask for advice before so I wouldn't be able to comment on whether or not they were any good.Grin

I was wondering about going that route though...

They can get infected. Maybe see a pharmacist incase they say that you need antibiotics. If it's not then you can take an antihistamine & put calamine lotion or Anthisan cream on it.

MrsWembley · 07/08/2012 09:59

I've been using Anthisan but I'm not sure if it's actually done anything. It was smaller when I first saw it and used the cream.Sad

Actually, just thought, how long does Anthisan last? It's just that this tube has been in my toilet bag a while two years.Blush

I find the action of rubbing Anthisan in actually spreads the poison further with bites Sad

It's still generally effective when it's been around ages, sure my last tube had it's third birthday Blush

Antihistamine tablets may be more appropriate in your case and I'd second getting advice from the pharmacist.

Mosquito bites will get temporarily bigger when scratched, that's normal and not a sign of infection. It's horseflie's bites that are more likely to get infected.

In any case, unless the bite is hot or there is pus or red streaking etc there is no reason to panic about a mosquito bite. Certainly not a reason to go and see a GP Shock

Mind you, we just came back from holidays and both DC look like they have chicken pox, covered with bites from head to toe.

winnybella · 07/08/2012 10:50

Oh, and how long they stay depends on how allergic a person is to them. My mum- gone on a few hours. Me- few days and itchy. DS- a week and without antihistamines some of them swell hugely.

Get some surgical spirit and dab it onto the bite with cotton wool - it will take the itch right out and the bite will subside much faster than otherwise. This works - I promise!

MrsWembley · 07/08/2012 11:00

Thanks all for stopping me worrying.Grin

Just been to the pharmacist and he said it looks like a normal bite too. We should only think of going to the drs if it changes shape/colour/size again ( apart from changing back to normalGrin)

After-Bite is great for mozzie bites. Kills the itching much better than anthisan, so less likelihood of infection. Ammonia-based so a bit of a smell but well worth it IMO.
