Ok for last 2/3 weeks been feeling (understatment) not great.

  • Exhausted - not tired, truly exhausted. Going to bed at 8 instead of 11, never seeing dh, house going to pot.
  • Maga thirsty - about 5/6 litres water per day. Constant thirst even after drinking loads, waking up all through night to drink.
  • therefore constantly needing to wee, getting very inconvenient & also waking 2/3 times a night to go to loo.
  • Feel sort of dopey & not clear thinking/sharp.
  • constipated (diet hasn't changed exxcept for loads more water)
  • craving sweets big time (normally a salty salami king of girl)
  • last period practically non-existant.

I had similar symptoms when pg before, done test (after 'period' would have ended, so not too early, negative.

Doc has tested for

  • sugar in blood ( I suspected diabetes but urine test for sugar come back ok)
  • liver - ok
  • anaemia - ok
  • bp - ok
  • thyroid - still waiting but had thyroid probs before & never had this thirst, only had this b4 when pg)

He phoned me with results & announced it was 'good news' but while I'm glad i'm so very healthy, why do I feel like such shit. Anyone had this b4??

you could still be pregnant - can you ask for a scan ?

Hope you feel better soon.

Elf1981 · 09/03/2006 07:29

Initially I thought diabetes but you have been tested... I read about something called Symptom X in a magazine the other month which is sort of like diabetes, but not insulin dependant so blood sugar levels are usually okay when tested. It is mostly controlled by a change in diet.

  1. Excess body fat - often distributed around the middle, in the neck and the face. This gives a tell-tale apple-shaped body (rather than a the usual pear-shape of an over-weight individual) and a moon-shaped face.
  2. Craving for sweet foods and drinks - "sweet" can be deceptive, for many foods such as white bread, potatoes and white rice contain high levels of hidden sugars.
  3. High blood pressure or hypertension.
  4. A chronic lack of energy and general lethargy.
  5. Mental fuzziness - the mind loses its sharpness and alertness.
  6. Skin tags in the neck, groin or armpit area.
  7. A bloated feeling after eating.
  8. Dry and flaky skin, splitting nails and dull hair.
  9. Diagonal creases in the lower ear lobe.

You can look \link{http://www.weightlosscenter.co.uk/syndrome_x.asp\here} for more details

I'd do another pregnancy test but also get your GP to do kidney function and ask him/her about the possibility of diabetes insipidus - it's very rare but your symptoms do fit it. Info \link{http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/000377.htm\here}.

ernest · 09/03/2006 18:52

thanks guys. I spoke to him tonight - guess what thyroid results also fine. He's hinting at phsychological as no obvious physical. Well, I'd say I'm def. not depressed but am bloody well fed up. And this is costing me a fortune. Aparently he has done kidney tests too & they're fine.

I'll try and get a pg test tomorrow, but I already know the result. Thanks for your time.

have you had a viral infection in the last three months, could it be a post viral syndrome?

or hormonal imbalance?

Callmemadam · 09/03/2006 19:20

Still think you are diabetic: I also think you should see another Gp and have a second opinion. My brother nearly died because of a failed diabetes diagnosis.

zippitippitoes · 09/03/2006 19:20

did he do bloods or glucose tolerance test for diabetes or just urine?

HappyMumof2 · 09/03/2006 19:33

did he test your hormone levels? I didn't have all the symptoms you describe but felt truly awful, tired, and a bit weird, when I missed 3 periods. I think it was due to excessive estrogen. My level was sky high when they tested it as I was not having periods (still don't know why!) Since they've come back and I feel normal again!

How old are you btw? could you be starting menopause?

mrstootough · 09/03/2006 19:34

What about ME have you any pains?

NannyL · 09/03/2006 19:36

ok.... i felt just like that about 6 weeks ago.

I was sooooo thirsty ALL the time...

felt really awful and tired

and i felt really light headed, like i couldnt think straight.

Also very very light period... (always light anyway!)

Booked Drs appointment and about 12 hours before made a miraculouse recovery! She did lots of tests etc... all came out normal so she said dont worry about it.

I hope you make the same miraculouse recovery that i did (id started to serioulsy think there was something massively wrong with me!)

Albert · 09/03/2006 19:37

I second the suggestion for a re-test for diabetes - I was also misdiagnosed. You could also go to a homeopath who will listen to you more - although this will probably be quite expensive too.

HappyMumof2 · 09/03/2006 19:37

actually, looking at your symptoms, I had most of them! The tiredness, not thinking straight, getting up in the night to wee 3 times & the craving sweets. Definately get your hormone levels checked!!

Do you have breast pain? I had severe breast pain too.

ernest · 11/03/2006 13:18

ok, no hormonal imbalance, no virus, done test & (no surprise) no pg. He's looked at my kidney's so I think that'll be diabetes ruled out.

He's gonna test for levels of eg magnesium, sodium, etc, but after that, he's at a loss.

I've been having headaches every day and I'm rally starting to feel miserable about the whole ting, as there doesn't seem to ba a reason, so no explanation & 'cure' iyswim

I went to a herbalist chemist (don't normally go in for that sort of thing, but thought Id try st john's wort) and she did me a mixture of 5 different herbs (in liquid form). Like I say, normally very traditional in my approach, but then there's normally nothing at all wrong with me. fingers crossed

but thanks you all for your help.

ernest - I have recently been through exactly the same process as you. My symptons were (and are)the same as yours, especially the tiredness. I don't know about you but I can be so tired that I can fall asleep sitting up on the sofa like an old lady and the tiredness is so overwhelming it's almost like "going under" when you have an anaesthetic. I came home from work yesterday afternoon at 1.30, had lunch and promptly fell asleep til 4.30 - I was livid as the house is an absolute tip and I had big plans for a mega clean-up. I had all the tests you have had and everything is normal - what on earth can it be?? I'd be interested to see how you get on with your mixture from the herbalist as I'm getting desperate....I need to get my life back as I'm just not functioning properly atm. I'm sure DH thinks I'm just idle Grin

ernest · 11/03/2006 13:48

misspiggy, sad and a bit glad, to hear you're going through it too. It's so frustrating and mad. I was also getting down cos the house was disintegrating round my ears. Dh's mum really poorly atm so can't really complain (too much), he is being moderately supportive, fo a bloke. Maybe it is the early menopause.

the herbalist woman reconned it could take a couple of weeks to feel the difference. Hope it's quicker because I haven't got the time to be ill, lol.

Have you seen a doc?

btw elf, thanks for that. i vaguely remember reading about symptom x tto, but only 2 of the symptoms match, the sweets & the mental fuzziness, no, sorry, 3, cos the tiredness too, but the weight, hypertension etc is def not case, but thanks for your time. It is interesting I am going to try and improve my diet, but it isn't too bad anyway - lots of veg but not much fruit I suppose.

OP posts:
hunkermunker · 11/03/2006 13:56

Diabetes not diagnosed by looking at kidneys - mine was diagnosed with a glucose tolerance test when I was pg - and I never had sugar in my urine.

Had loads of your symptoms too. Please ask for blood tests.

zippitippitoes · 11/03/2006 13:59

you could try a low gi diet

it might help with the sugar cravings

avoid concentrated fruit juice

when you feel exceptionally sleepy try a ten minute walk

Misspiggy · 11/03/2006 14:01

Yes, I saw the Dr at the beginning of Jan (was convinced I had diabetes!) but he did a fasting blood test to check that plus loads of others and everything came back fine. Similar to you, he seems to think I'm depressed and this is a physical reaction to it. Things are a bit tricky atm (nothing awful but loads of low level crap that all adds up...you know how it is!) but I'm definitely not depressed so I'm at a loss. I read through elf's link and wonder if that could be my problem as I am overweight and apple shaped (how attractive eh?!)and I'm in a constant state of mental fuzziness - I'll look into that a bit more. I did wonder about early menopause as well - I'm 41 so I s'pose that's a possiblity. I think I'll make another appointment with the Dr and see what he thinks as I've got to get it sorted. I'm just sleeping my life away !!

spidermama · 11/03/2006 14:03

I must say the symptoms do sound very like diabetes. Has the doc tested your blood too? Or just your urine, because he needs to test your blood as it's not always present in the urine. (my ds was dx-ed with diabetes in Dec).

If it is diabetes you really need to know because you will get very ill very quickly without insulin. I don't want to be alarmist, but make sure you insist on a blood test. It's very quick and easy.

Good luck.

getbakainyourjimjams · 11/03/2006 14:50

ernest last summer I had a few weeks of veyr achey joints and utter exhaustion and some extra weeing, but no obvious illness. Was convinced I had somehting hideous- then it all disappeared. I now think it must have been a viral infection.

Because of the amount you are drinking etc may be worth checking out \link{http://www.diabetesinsipidus.org/4_types_di.htm\diabetes insipidus} although I admit to knowing nothing about it other than it doesn't involve sugar!

spidermama · 13/03/2006 10:04

How are you doing ernest?
I hope you've got some answers.

ernest · 16/03/2006 12:48

No answers from doc, but 2 seperate people suggested a yeast/fungus problem (like candida). I don't have any infections or rashes so wasn't convinced, but did a web search & some symptoms tie in - especially the sugar cravings & the tiredness. There's a test you can do at home - 1st thing in morning before you've had a drink or bruched teeth, spit in a glass of room temperature water. Keep an eye on it for up to an hour. If your spit is still floating you've got healthy spit and well done, but if it drops down in threads or forms a cloudy puddle at the bottom, then you may well have a candida/yeaty problem.

Anyway, mine wasn't good, so I've stocked up on live yoghurt, stuff called bioflorin which re-introduces healthy bacteria into the gut (to gove the yoghurt a boost) garlic, which also kills yeast, but is also great for flighting exhaustion and improving mental clarity. I'm also avoiding sugar like the plague.

AM feeling a bit better, feel knackered now, but fingers crossed it will all slowly improve as doctor found nowt. hope this helps some of you
