AF came yesterday, and apart from a few cramps there's practically nothing! 90% less then last month. How does this work? Am I going to bleed until next month?? Confused

I've been prescribed tranexamic acid. But this is after being sick as a dog on mefenamic acid - hideous 2 day vomiting bonanza two months in row because I wrote off first occasion as bug.

Doc says no guarantee same won't happen with these pills - same potential side effects for both. So Ive not got around to trying because am scared will happen again and there doesn't seem to be a good time to schedule in potential sickness spree. :(

coffeeinbed · 06/08/2012 22:39

yes.
I take it with some Feminax, but I suppose the one with the painkillers must be just as good.

coffeeinbed · 06/08/2012 22:40

I didn't know about the Ibuprufen.

LadySybildeChocolate · 06/08/2012 22:43

I had more pain today for some reason, GreatBritain. I have some paracetamol, but it hasn't been that bad. It does work. I didn't think it would but I could have happily have used the same towel since last night (I didn't, because that's vile) as opposed to one every 2 hours.

I hope you find something, Pooka. Sad

Pooka · 06/08/2012 22:43

My periods are about 8 days of hideousness. And weirdly have included nausea and throbbing headaches as well as general malaise (sore throat, banging headache etc) for last 5 months, so maybe should bite the bullet.

OhYouGreatGreatBritain · 06/08/2012 22:45

Oh, I don't want more pain :( have been alternating ibuprofen and paracetamol with a heat pad stuck down my joggers today.

CarGirl · 06/08/2012 22:49

If you've finished having a family then womb ablation has a good success rate.

KickTheGuru · 06/08/2012 22:50

They didn't work at all for me either. But then, I haemorhaged until my BP dropped and I had a fit. Then was taken to hospital in an ambulance.

I preferred norethisterone though. It worked slightly better but I suppose it was also a high progesterone pill and I did have to take it every day for about a year Angry

LadySybildeChocolate · 06/08/2012 22:50

The GP said I can take Mefanamic Acid for the pain, as Tranexamic works to lighten the flow. You could try both (check with your GP first though). It doesn't hurt now though. Smile

They sound horrid, pooka. I'd pop to see your GP and get them to check your iron levels. I had headaches, bendy nails, fatigue, tight chest and came out in cold sores. My haemoglobin turned out to be half of the normal level (6.2 or something), the GP was shocked I was still walking around.

OP posts:
KickTheGuru · 06/08/2012 22:51

Have you been checked for fibroids BTW?

LadySybildeChocolate · 06/08/2012 22:52

Shock That's horrendous, Guru! Are you OK now?

I don't think they can do that for fibroids, cargirl.

OP posts:
designerbaby · 06/08/2012 22:53

Mefanamic acid a common painkiller in South Africa where FIL is a GP. He gives us loads to bring back, and can't believe it's so hard to get hold of here...

LadySybildeChocolate · 06/08/2012 22:53

Yup, Guru. I have 2 the size of large grapefruits and some small ones. I'm waiting for a gynae appointment so I can ask for them to be embolized. They reach up to my belly button so I'm bloated most of the time.

OP posts:
KickTheGuru · 06/08/2012 23:18

You're lucky! Mine were 8cm and 10cm! There were left so long, they kept reproducing (like yours!) Hmm

I had a myomectomy though. I was thrilled I didn't need anything going up my lady bits...

Ironically enough, they didn't think the haemorhaging was "life threatening" and my haemoglobin levels had dropped to 5.9. I was essentially in the "blood tranfusion" group but they STILL didn't think it life threatening.

I then had a nice and fun spot of sores all over my mouth and was sick constantly because I had no immune system. Eventually, they kept trying me on tranexamic acid, which did sweet FA. The day I had the BP drop and the fit, my consultant decided I didn't need another script for norethestirone and fucked off home at 2pm on a Friday. Luckily, my local pharmacy gave me a cover for the 3 days of weekend but I landed up in the ambulance anyway.

They cancelled my surgery about 3 days later and I flew to another country to pay for it to be removed. I also had the gonapepto-depo injections into my stomach to freeze hormones (inducing menopause) so that the fibroids could shrink to an operable level over 3 months. They cancelled my surgery 2 weeks before the end of the 3 month course of injections.

Go figure.

And 8 weeks ago, was back in hospital nearly dying and diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.

I should be dead a lot Grin

Pooka · 06/08/2012 23:21

Thanks ladysybil - did have lots of blood test pre Christmas because had suspected glandular fever (though turned out just to be recurrent tonsillitis). Hb was fine. Then I had thumb prick for blood donation, and failed, but they also took blood from arm which passed at 11 which is amazing for me (and meant that I could donate after all).

But all my fingernails are dipped - wasn't aware that that might be related to poor iron.

I think I'm going to have to give the tranexamic a go next month. If I'm ill I'mill and at least I've tried.

Have been pondering ablation as a possible solution but if iron levels are fine I'd be surprised if gp was in favour, at least until I've ruled out the medicines.

I used, pre dc, to have 3 days lovely periods. Was fine after dd although cycle increased from 28 to 38 days. Then after ds1 it just all went slightly tits up. And even worse after ds2. Back to 28 days but just horrible. I blame the boy hormones my age though if I follow my mother's pattern have another 12 years at least of periods to go and when I put it that way it seems like ages. 144 and counting Wink

LadySybildeChocolate · 06/08/2012 23:22

Goodness, they were really crap Sad I can't stay in hospital, there's no one to care for ds. The embolisation can be done as a day case.

OP posts:
KickTheGuru · 06/08/2012 23:23

Yeh the myomectomy is basically a c-section without the joy of a baby. Different joy though.

Wow like, no one to look after your DS? I would if you could get rid of those awful things forever

LadySybildeChocolate · 06/08/2012 23:26

The last gynae offered to babysit. Grin I'm only 35, I'm not sure that a myomectomy is the best option. I've been messing around with my diet and, oddly, that seems to help as they don't hurt as much now.

OP posts:
cocolepew · 06/08/2012 23:28

DD is 14 and gets this on prescribtion, I think it makes her petiods longer but only a day or two.

KickTheGuru · 06/08/2012 23:29

I was erm...26 I think? Or perhaps 27?

I think mine were too big for anything else. I had no bladder control (ironically, blamed the fibroids NOW when suddenly needed to pee a lot with the recent diabetes diagnosis..."oh I had fibroids so there must have been lasting damage from the surgery"

CointreauVersial · 06/08/2012 23:30

I went on the pill (at 45!) to control my hideous periods - that has worked pretty well. I can actually leave the house now on days 1-3. I don't think I have the fibroids complication, though.

LadySybildeChocolate · 06/08/2012 23:31

I'll see how it goes, coco.

The only thing he recommended was a hysterectomy until I asked what the other options were. Hmm They are not as bad as yours were. Doctors can be really stupid.

OP posts:
KickTheGuru · 06/08/2012 23:36

The first bloke suggested a hysterectomy to me. I told him to fuck off and walked out.

I was 27 at the time so aside from NOT being able to have ANY children like...ever, it would bring all kinds of later menopause risks closer (I did a lot of research at the time but unless you are pre menopausal, I wouldn't do it!!)

KickTheGuru · 06/08/2012 23:37

Depending on the size of the fibroids, there are actually a number of different options. Myomectomy is the most extreme and as I said, mine were big and I was also really stressed which didn't help.

LadySybildeChocolate · 06/08/2012 23:41

I wasn't planning on it, I'm just shocked at how routinely they suggest this route though. My sister has them, she was ttc and she was told to have a hysterectomy as well. Hmm
