Is there any benefit in a child receiving half their Omega 3 rdi?

There is this milk which is fortified with Omega 3. I have tried every Omega 3 supplement (and failed) on my ds (age 3) and strongly believe that he would benefit from it. This milk (Advance, it's called) gives 50% of the rdi in 2 glasses, but is this worth anything at all if they are not getting the full 100%? Apart from oily fish, what foods contain Omega 3?

I think it's logical to assume that 50% is better than nothing

Also some eggs now contain omega 3

I think half would be better than none, i drank the milk and it tasted good but some people say that they can taste fish. My boy loved it.

jamie oliver does an omega 3 dish, could post it for you?

canadianmum · 09/03/2006 11:43

you can get eggs with omega 3, the ones I buy are called "intelligent" and I get them from waitrose. Worth a try if your son likes eggs. Sainsburys sells another brand (I think). HTH

half rdi definitely better than nothing.

Is it really only 2 glasses , had thought I read at weekend equivalent to rdi was 1.8 litres. Think any is better than none (ds wouldn't take the full dose for a while and was still improved)and there are other sources which could help make up the difference - eggs , yoghurt, oily fish and so on.

LIZS · 09/03/2006 13:25

Just checked and you're right . 2x250ml is 1/2 rdi.

throckenholt · 09/03/2006 13:28

it is not a threshold you have to reach for it to be effective. Any of the relevant oil will be used by the body - so even a small amount should be beneficial.

The two glasses applies to f/f milk. It's something liek 8 for s/s. I know, it seems logical that half the rdi is better than none, but my thinking is something like, each day's intake is a link in a chain, so if the link isn't complete, it is useless. Rather like the fact that any supplement is useless if you don't take it consistently.

Re eggs, we have our own hens, so I don't buy them. He isn't good with fish. The other two now take capsules (one chewy, one not) and I thought I had finally succeeded with the new haliborange blackcurrant chewies but afer a week he went on strike. I obviously don't want to fork out extra for Advance milk if it's not going to do anything, but if it's going to work, it can't be any more expensive than buying the supplements.

Interesting comment about the fishy taste though. I'm sure my little blighter would notice it and probably throw up.Shock

utterlyconfused · 09/03/2006 22:14

we get it from boots, where the rest of the Eye-Q products are, but you might have to go to one of the larger stores
