I have had heart palpitations for about 15 years. After a few tests they were diagnosed as sinus arrhrhmia. They come and go and don't bother me. They got worse during pregnancy and if I have caffeine or alcohol. Anyway, I'm currently on holiday in Turkey with friends and last night we had a big night.. I drank about 4 bottles of beer and 3 gin and tonics. I didn't get much sleep and today felt a bit ropey. I was just sitting down, got up and went to another room, bent down to pick up a toy and then had a huge palpitation and skippy beats that lasted a few seconds. I took some deep breaths and then almost passed out. Afterwards I was really shaky and weak. This has never happened before and I'm terrified. Does anyone have any experience of this type of palpitation ?

I have had this when had too much alcohol the day before - mine was diagnosed as ectopic heartbeats. Drink LOTS of water - you need to rehydrate :)

It is most likely to be due to the alcohol.

You need to cut down. I have several patients with similar conditions and most of them say they can have one glass of wine, but not two, as their palpitations get worse.

That said, you should see your GP and maybe have further monitoring just to make sure the condition hasn't got worse.

Thank you. I don't drink very much but last night I did overdo it. Rationally I think you ate hungover, dehydrated, low blood sugar and that's why it happened but I have never almost passed out before and that's what stressing me out.

That is why I think you need a check up. At the very least an ECG, maybe a 24 hour tape and a review by a cardiologist.
