DS1 (now 4.8 years old) has been having both night terrors and severe nightmares since he was 2.7 years old.
They were triggered by a specific incident, but have now far outstripped the original trigger. (For completeness, the incident involved DS1 getting trapped inside a giant inflatable ring at a soft play centre, and me knowing about it to rescue him for several minutes. By the time I found him he was hysterical
.)
DS1 wakes from night terrors and/or night mares several times every night. It is causing severe disruption to his daytimes because he is so tired. He is also phobic of bedtime because he's so scared of the dreams he will have when he falls asleep.
We have exhausted every solution offered to us from the HV, the GP and the private paediatrician we were referred to by the GP when she had run out of ideas.
As a last ditch measure, the GP referred DS1 to CAMHS.
CAMHS have written back (to the GP, cc'ing us) to say that they have discussed the GP's concerns and have decided that DS1 does not meet the criteria for referral. They "feel that the support of the HV might be more appropriate".
They don't seem to have appreciated that our HV has done everything she can think of, as has the GP, as has the paediatrician.
Where do we go from here? Can we appeal this decision? Or seek another referral?
I'm at the end of my tether. I hadn't realised until the CAMHS letter came just how much I was pinning my hopes on them being able to help. DS1 asked me last month why all his friends have nice dreams when his are always scary. I didn't have an answer
.
