Depo Injection - anyone know when it's too late and you are not covered?

Hi,

Was due my injection Wednesday, completely forgot about it. Had sex last night but think I am still covered?

More to the point, can't get an appointment until next Tuesday evening!! Will I still be covered if I have it then, without having to use anything else? Going on holiday on the 14th for 2 weeks Sad

TIA

Bloss

I forgot to have mine recently and had to do two pregnancy tests over the course of a fortnight before they would give me the injection. But I was more than two weeks late, I think my nurse said if it was less than ten days they would just give it to me as usual. So - I think - you should be fine

Hi Calamity - thanks so much for replying.

Yes I forgot it this year another time too and had to do the test thing. Just couldn't remember how long you are not covered for....

FIngers crossed. I will be within 10 days.

from netdoctor:

To provide effective contraceptive cover, Depo-Provera must be given every 12 weeks. Make sure that you or your doctor make your next appointment for 12 weeks time. If you are more than five days late for your next injection, you will not be protected against pregnancy. You will need to have a pregnancy test before your next injection can be given. If the injection is given more than five days late (ie more than 89 days since your last injection) you will need to use additional barrier methods of contraception, eg condoms, for the next 14 days.

How does depo work?

I'm due to have this in two weeks, upon my midwifes recommendation, but how safe is it?

Does it stop your periods?

vodkaanddietirnbru · 04/08/2012 08:03

family planning association however says this:

If you miss the next injection it may mean that you are no longer protected against pregnancy. To ensure that you remain protected against pregnancy you should not be more than two weeks late for your next injection.

I would take extra precautions just in case

vodkaanddietirnbru · 04/08/2012 08:05

Depo made me bleed constantly and i put on hundreds of weight. It can delay fertility returning after you stop taking it and it thins your bones. I would avoid it personally.

depo

McPhee · 04/08/2012 08:23

Oh crap Sad

What you you suggest? I don't really want to go for the coil, coz I'm a wuss Blush

vodkaanddietirnbru · 04/08/2012 08:34

I have the mirena coil so cant really advise anything else. If you've given birth then insertion shouldnt be too bad. I took painkillers beforehand and it was a little uncomfortable rather than painful.

CalamityJones · 04/08/2012 09:36

I've found the depo to be absolutely fine. No weight gain, and I had intermittent bleeding for the first month but nothing since. I wasn't aware of the bone thinning though Confused

Thegoddessblossom · 04/08/2012 16:38

Me too calamity, I've found it to be absolutely fine, when I remember to have it of course.....
