Surgery after thyroid eye disease - sounds fairly serious.

I've had Graves disease for a number of years and while I have had one remission, last year I had a flare up and for the first time had pretty significant eye symptoms. I ended up needing a course of IV steroids earlier this year, but it all seems to have calmed down now.

I've been left with a slightly protruding left eye and higher upper eyelid than on the right, so have been referred by my opthalmologist to the eye surgeons, for potential rehabilitative surgery.

Looking on the internet the orbital decompression surgery looks fairly major with potential complications and a long recovery. Has anyone been through this and what is it really like? I also wondered whether anyone has had lid surgery without having the orbital decompresssion, as to be honest, all I want is to look in the mirror and not have one eye noticeably more open than the other!

Hope someone has been through this and can describe what it's like.

OP, you might get a better response if you post this on a specific thyroid board like www.thyroid-disease.org.uk.
