FFS! What could this insane itching in the back of my head be??

Jacksmania · 27/07/2012 07:49

It's been driving me mental. My scalp in the back of my head itches insanely, but only in the back of my head. It's in that dip right below the bump of the occipital bone, above the hairline, only there. No itching in the rest of my head. I can't feel any bumps or bites or anything. And this has been going on forever, seriously - probably a few years now, but has gotten much worse in the last few weeks. I mentioned it to DH and he said he's been noticing it for a long time and says that I start scratching like a dog in the evening, when I first wake up in the morning, or when I wake up in the middle of the night.

It does not itch during the day - usually, anyway, but during the last few weeks, it has occasionally done. Once I start scratching, it's game over, I have to sit on my hands to force myself to stop. Thank goodness I can't have long nails for my job or I'd have no scalp left.

I don't have dandruff. No flakes, sparkly clean scalp. I had DH part my hair and try to see if there was any redness or anything, he said he couldn't see anything but made noises like a chimp grooming its young, the big idiot :o

I have good skin otherwise, no eczema or psoriasis.

I tried smearing 1% hydrocortisone cream on every night for a few nights, and it helped, but once I stopped, it came back. This morning I stumbled upon my stepdad's medicated shampoo for dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis, and tried that... not sure if it's done anything. Went out and bought dandruff shampoo today, just in case.

Aaaaaaaaarrrrrgghhhhhhhh! HELP!!!

(Will book GP app't next week...)

Oh and I don't know how relevant it is but I should ring the "not in UK" bell.

It could be a fungal infection, bit like athletes foot, only on your head! But I suspect that would make flaky skin. It would be worth trying some anti fungal shampoo.

Lucyellensmum99 · 27/07/2012 08:51

Shock at leaving full marks in their hair for half an hour, you really shouldnt do that - tis dangerous, like.

The one thing that i know that works is Frontline, but its for dogs Blush it is meant to be THE most effective treatment, but i have never been brave enough to use on my DDs. Despite the midwife suggesting i put it on DD1 Hmm I can't understand why they don't produce a human version, probably because its quite an aggressive chemical i suppose and woulnt pass the safety trials, but i know lots of people in the veterinary profession who use it on their children.

The very best treatment is "condition and comb" its a PAIN IN THE ARSE and you have to do it for a few weeks to break the cycle, but often things like full marks don't atually do this so you find yourself re-infested ina couple of weeks anyway. Please don't be angry with your new friend emile. Nits are a pain in the bum but not really that dangerous and some people do struggle with infestation and end up taking that "hands up in the air, what can you do" attitude. We did with DD1 who had really thick hair Envy and was probably infested more often than not during her school years. DD2, touch wood, thank God seems to have escaped so far and long may it last as she screams blue murder when i even brush her hair so a nit comb is not going to be welcomed!

FFS, now I'm itching and crawling all over Angry

I'm going to bed in a minute will probably lie there scratching like a dog but as soon as the GP's office opens, I'm ringing for an appointment.

And whoever said "they'd be the size of tarantulas by now"... just...

Right now, athlete's foot on my head (athlete's head) sounds like a wonderful diagnosis... let's hope...

OhYouGreatGreatBritain · 27/07/2012 09:08

You could try some cocois ointment. its smelly and messy but it worked when my scalp got upset from using harsh stuff for my psoriasis.

EmilieFloge · 27/07/2012 09:10

LEM - it's not dangerous as far as I can tell, it's not got any pesticide in it, it just suffocates them.

If anyone knows otherwise please let me know. I think there would be a big warning on the leaflet if it was dangerous to overstep the time limit - anyway it's impossible not to leave it on longer than that, it tells you to comb their entire head before washing it out and it takes about 20 minutes to do each child with the comb.

I think maybe you're confusing it with the pesticide treatment?

SilveryMoon · 27/07/2012 09:12

I've heard that lice like the bottom of the back of the head and behind the ears.
If you'd had them for years, they'd be HUGE now.
Lucyellensmum99 Is that true? Frontline on people? Apply it like you would to dogs?

EmilieFloge · 27/07/2012 09:12

Btw I'm not sure I'd recommend Frontline, it's intended for animals, not children. And it is a strong insecticide.

I think I heard someone talking about using it a few years ago actually, maybe it is safe to a degree but I'd be very very wary as there's no instructions for how long to leave it on a child, etc etc...rather use something that is intended for purpose.

Hedrin also works really well ime.

Jacksmania · 27/07/2012 09:13

I want you all to know I'm lying in bed twitching. And I can feel imaginary invisible crawly things that are not actually THERE!

Sort of like the Invisible Friends thread Shock[creepy].

:o Would it be fair to say it's all on in my head?

Must. Keep. Sense. Of. Humour.

Could it be the washing powder/fabric conditioner you use? I had a seriously itchy scalp for a few weeks and it turned out to be the fabric conditioner on the pillow cases.

Itchy patch right at the base of the skull and it went away when I switched to another brand.

BertieBotts · 27/07/2012 09:22

I had them for six months once Shock I'd done work experience at a nursery but was past the age of regular checking so we didn't pick them up.

They were pretty big - about 4 or 5 mm by then.

Just stick some conditioner in your hair, lean forwards over the bath and comb out yourself with a nit comb. If you've got them then they'll appear, and then you can get some nit stuff and treat yourself.

In fact, just get some stuff anyway before you do the conditioner thing. If DD is 4 she'll get them before long anyway and it's easier to have the stuff ready in the house.

steppemum · 27/07/2012 09:34

doubt very much it is lice, you would be visibly crawling by now. They do start at back and behind ears, but once you have a good infestation they are all over, and they get big and visible. my dd1 had them regularly at old school and ds and dd2 and dh never got them.

Full Marks is a gentle eradicator, not a chemical, so pretty sure it would be safe to leave on longer

I think it is probably some kind of skin condition. I get very itchy scalp when I use the wrong shampoo. I now use head and shoulders for sensitive skin, (or supermarket equivalent) and my scalp is fine. I was surprised at how easy it was to get rid of the itching after years - just shampoo, and gentle baby shampoos are as bad for me as stronger ones, I needed whatever it is in the medicated one.

sagenod · 27/07/2012 10:10

5mm! Gosh, how big can they get??!

ThisWeekonFancyPuffin · 27/07/2012 11:20

If it helps Jacks they have probably formed a township by now..

redrubyshoes · 27/07/2012 11:48

Try coal tar shampoo.

Jacksmania · 27/07/2012 15:02

Bleurgh.

Good morning all, I'm sat here with a cup of strong coffee after a slightly restless night Hmm.

Have just remembered my lovely GP doesn't work Fridays I'd say lucky bag but neither do I so won't be able to see her until next week, but we're seeing a good friend this morning and I think I'll ask her to take a look.

If she sees nits, she'll probably run for the hills :(

FancyPuffin, I imagine if I do have them they'll shortly form a dictatorship and hijack my head. Which would explain a lot.

OP posts:
hellymelly · 27/07/2012 15:08

I get a really itchy head from certain shampoos, so the rinsing thing suggested rings true with me. Would think you'd be totally infested with nits by now if you'd had them for ages.

Jacksmania · 27/07/2012 15:10

See, that's what I think

Off to try my new bottle of Head and Shoulders now. DS picked it out, he chose the one with the sea star on it. :)

pensheric · 27/07/2012 17:02

I reckon on allergy-house dust mites/grasses/pollen/hayfever etc and suggest antihistamine

Jacksmania · 27/07/2012 21:28

I asked my friend to check the back of my head carefully and she said all she could see was perfectly clean white scalp. So, I will still be going to the GP, but am completely relieved that I'm not infested with crawling things!! :o
