Recurrent anaemia

...any tips? I keep getting anaemic and it's driving me insane. Any tips on what typically causes it or how I can overcome it? I take iron tablets, get over it, have a tsunamical (made up word) period, get anaemic again... etc.

Got an appointment to see the GP next week. Anything I should be asking? He seems a bit vague on the topic.

Thanks.

You need to sort your periods out. You can get medication to reduce the flow, which should really help. Are you taking them over a long period? You may only be taking enough to improve your blood count, but not to increase your reserves (which are different). Ask your GP to organise an ultrasound to check for fibroids, as these can cause severe bleeding. Smile

Thank you, LadySybilde. That is very helpful! If the mdication is trans-something acid, I've a feeling I can't take it, due to a blood-clotting disorder, but I will ask and check. This is part of my problem: a lot of the things I could take are ruled out, due to the blood-clotting problem. Still, I will ask.

Best of luck, I hope they can find something for you.

Could you ask your GP or haematologist about Mirena?

I know it gets a bad press here, but if your periods are hellish, needs must. Otherwise, there's the possibility of ablation, but only if your family is complete. Most people can't get ablation without first trying mirena, but if you are not allowed hormones, that would not apply to you.
