Back ache after labour, how long will it last?

My son was born 9 days ago. He was back to back, big (9lb1) and I had an epidural so probably got into some funny positions without realising. Since coming out of hospital I've had horrible lower back pain, mainly on the right hand side, I think it's sacrum/sacroiliac pain. I'm taking ibuprofen and paracetamol. I saw a cranial osteopath yesterday but that hasn't imprOved things. Am I just being impatient? Will it get better on its own? I hate sitting around doing nothing and feel bad for my 4yo ds that I can't leave the house or do more with him. Any tips or reassurances would be much appreciated.

If it is so bad that you can't leave the house, you should see a doctor.

It is very common to have a bad back in the early months, usually because your abdominal muscles are weak and not supporting your spine. Post natal exercises are very effective, but you may not be advised to start an actual class for a few more weeks. You can still do gentle exercises on your own.

You have to remember to bend your knees when you pick anything up (including the baby) and not your back.

Thanks Claire, I did mention it to my community midwife and also my doctor (over the phone while checking what painkillers are safe to take). Both were quite dismissive about it, saying he was back to back , big etc. That it's normal. If it's not any better by Tuesday (2 weeks after birth) I'll make an appt at the surgery.

My ds was 9lb 5 and was also back to back but no epidural (believe me I asked for one!). My back took a while to settle down but i managed to get out the house etc. It was very sore in the morning or if id been holding ds all day. I think if it continues past 2 weeks to the point of being a real problem then you need to make yourself heard.

Also found that carrying and picking up big baby really didnt help and prolonged the problem. Im fine now btw but it is 4yrs on.

Thanks cupcake, I have got an appt with my hospital physiotherapist next week. She was really good during my pregnancy at keeping things at bay. If there's no improvement by the end of next week I'll go back to doctor and see if I can have an X ray. I had another visit from a different community midwife this morning who told me it's normal for up to 6 weeks after the birth, but she also said I should see my GP. She also told me to try to not pick up DS too much - slightly difficult advice to follow!
Glad you've made a full recovery. I hope it didn't take the full 4 years!
