How was it found? Have you got appointment for removal? Or consulation (sorry just trying to check details before launching in with my story)

Hi Thanks for reply. Was found during routine smear. Waiting to see consultant.

I had one removed at the colposcopy dept of our local hospital years ago.

Can't remember if I had a local anaesthetic or not but I expect I did. Think my legs were in stirrups and the doc just got on with it. It was removed by cortorisation.

Was kept there after the procedure for about an hour to make sure I felt ok then allowed to go with advice on what to avoid and for how long etc.

No problem at all.

May be different in some way now but I don't see why it would be.

HTH Smile

I have got one, but it's staying put.

I had one and it was removed last summer. Although actually, once they removed that one they found another three or four behind it. It was like a smear, uncomfortable but not painful. This sounds gross but I really wasn't aware of any pain. They tweak the polyp between a sort of tweezer and twist it until it snaps off, but they have no nerve endings so you can't feel it. The nurse found them with a little camera she inserted, and then the image was shown on a tv screen, angled so I could watch it too!? Sounds horrid but was really fine. Took about 40 mins, was told to take paracetamol 30 mins before I went in, got bus home absolutely fine after.

Er thanks - it sounds awful but if you're sure it's just uncomfortable...I was hoping for a general anaesthetic ! Grin

My experience was very like lucy OP. I had a large polyp removed and a sample of womb lining taken for biopsy, last November. Very much like a smear - uncomfy but not painful. I had no anaesthetic (it wasn't offered) and I was very scared it would hurt but it didn't and I have a dreadfully low pain threshold. I was fine afterwards too. The whole thing was nothing like I thought it would be. And the staff were so sweet they really put me at my ease. I've had smear tests that have been more uncomfortable than this was. The bleeding between periods and heavy bleeding from the polyp has totally calmed down now.

lucylookout · 26/07/2012 20:30

Really, it's fine. Like a smear, uncomfortable but not actually painful. Sorry if my description was too detailed, but I didn't know what to expect when I went. If you've just got the one it might only take 10 mins or so. Good luck Smile

Thank you both. I am nervous but suitably reassured by your experiences. Flippin' fanjos...

Mine was spotted during smear test. Nurse advised me to see GP, who referred me to gynaecology dept at hospital. At this stage I did not know whether I was going for removal or just a look-see. I guess they make that decision depending on what they see. So, gynae man said I had 4 polyps that needed removing, reassured me that no pain cells there so no need for anaesthetic. And it really didn't hurt. Just a bit ungainly lying there with legs wide apart. Took 10-15 minutes, much twisitng with large-ish tweezer things. No cutting (as far as I was aware) the polyps were just "twisted" away. I was very glad of the nurse there, as someone who could smile reassuringly as gynae worked at my nether regions. Nurse freqeuntly asked how I was doing, made small talk etc. Remember to take a sanitary towel for after, as you may/will bleed a bit, otherwise hospital may provide one (but not so nice).

I attended alone and drove home alone: felt fine if a little shaken. Took DS1 to sports club as usual, and went to Waitrose for cup of tea and cake (weekly habit). Devastated to find cafe shut for refurbishment, I really felt like crying! Worst bit of whole procedure.!! Biopsy results about 2-3 weeks later - all clear.

i had a very large one removed recently as a dat surgery case - whole procedure took less than half and hour from the time i was taken down to theatre to the time i remember looking at the clock.

no side effects, no bleeding, no restrictions on activities at all

i think the fear is worse than the procedure.

thankfully the bioposy results were clear although i have to have 6 monthly smears
