Try sucking on a boiled sweet or sugar lump or similar. Gets a tiny bit of glucose into the system which can stop the reaction of your irritated stomach rejecting everything you try to swallow.

Water on a teaspoon, one tsp every 15 minutes until it is tolerated if you're worried about dehydration. Once you can tolerate it shorten the time between spoonfuls.

Thank you, my throat is throbbing from all the retching. Will try and get someone to source boiled sweets and give the drinking a rest. I had Norovirus a few years ago and can still remember the relief at sipping something and it not just bouncing straight back up.

Both DH and I have found that when very sick and unable to keep anything down, we can still manage sparkling water. Don't know why this is, but it seems to work to keep hydrated when nothing else does. Hope you feel better soon

Poor you. It's a rotten feeling. I find sipping slightly flat coca cola helps. And sucking mints. If I drink water it makes me want to throw up again for some reason and I always crave something a bit fizzy and find I can fancy that. Also I think if you have something in your stomach and need to be sick, it stops the retching and helps you be sick with less discomfort (if that's possible!) I also think coke replaces the sugar you will have lost and gives you a bit of instant energy. Hope you feel lots better soon.

Keep drinking....although you feel you are bringing it all back up, you are not..
Some fluid will still be absorbed this way

amillionyears · 25/07/2012 16:11

I think I am right in saying ask someone to buy you diorilytes or else electolytes[never sure which is which]the pharmacist at the chemist will be able to advise.
It is a flavoured powder that is to be mixed with water, and contains sugars and salt.
People are suggesting sugar.salt is vital too.
If it goes on too long, and not sure how long is too long without fluids, then you will need to see a GP.One of my DDs is prone to this, and goes to hospital to be put on a drip.Saline I think.

oopslateagain · 25/07/2012 16:52

If you're throwing up that much and it's as hot there as it is here, your electrolyte (salts) balance will be horribly out-of-whack. And one of the symptoms of electrolyte imbalance is nausea and vomiting.

Pinch the skin on the back of your hand - if it springs back, you're ok. If it stays 'tented', you are dehydrated - seriously dehydrated. Try taking small amounts of water as other posters have suggested, but if you get palpitations, or start to feel confused or 'drunk', you need to see a doctor - fast.

Suck on ice cubes if you must, but don't just stop taking fluids (both the stomach & the mouth can take in quite a bit of fluid that will reach the bloodstream).
I went to hospital seriously dehydrated (not just that but high fever).

BeehavingBaby · 25/07/2012 19:50

Just about recovered now, food still making me feel ill though. Hot nights did not help my recuperation! Thanks for all the advice and kind words Smile.
