Too much radiation from x-rays

Is it really so harmful and what damage will it cause. Have had so many chest, back, pelvis, ct scans, mris and other scans with chemicals for heart lungs, kidneys etc. (all within 7 months)

Now doctor is refusing to do any more x-rays because of radiation exposure. So this has got me worried because hospital do them at the drop of a hat.

I have chosen not to search the internet!

I think x rays are pretty low radiation, ct scans and scans where dye is used contain more radiation and lifetime exposure risk should be considered before doing one. However, Im sure the hospital only do them when they consider that the benefits outweight the risks.

I found this which refers to a normal chest x ray which migth reassure you 'To explain it in simple terms, we can compare the radiation exposure from one chest x-ray as equivalent to the amount of radiation exposure one experiences from our natural surroundings in 10 days.'

There is a good table on this page which tells you the equivalent background radiation for all different scans / x rays and the risk they present.

Its very, very unlikely that you would have any harm at all from the xrays and CTs that you have had. But x ray departments do keep a record of what radiation you have had, and have policies on a point where they will not take more xrays unless there is very good reason to, just to be safe
