On and off since DD I have had the odd episode of piles with slight bleeding. I would usually be OK the next time I used the loo. This time I was constipated and after straining to pass a stool I noticed a lot more blood than normal. Three movements since and each one bloody but not as bad as first one.

How long does the bleeding last? I have increased my fibre and water and hope this will do the trick but it ia always disturbing when you see blood when you would not normally see it. I need to watch my diet. Grateful for any shared experiences

I had awful piles after dd (even the m/w said so, so I guess they must have been!) - I have to say they didn't bleed though.
How old is dd? Are the piles still there, if you know what I mean?

NotQuiteCockney · 05/03/2006 20:13

I'm told that Anusol can make things better, but haven't persevered with it enough.

Please try to avoid straining. Please do your best to avoid constipation - I'm assuming you increased fibre and water with this goal, but increasing fibre suddenly can cause constipation.

The constipation causes bleeding.

Oh, to be safe - the blood is bright red, not dark, right?

busybaby · 05/03/2006 20:16

the m/W gave me anusol - very effective - along with a warm bath and some gentle pressure! Blush gRIM HUH?!

drosophila · 05/03/2006 20:24

Blood is bright red. Mine are internal and are not too painful when I pass a stool now but yesterday it was a bit like birth. DD is 13mths. Thanks for replying.

I had piles when 33 weeks pregnant and after a week of bleeding and being v painful they settled down. They have never gone though and I still have them but they dont cause me any bother. I was actually wondering how to get rid of them.

NotQuiteCockney · 05/03/2006 20:37

Yeah, applying anusol etc to internal piles never appealed to me much, either.

This isn't anything to worry about, but you do need to avoid constipation. If you manage that, you won't get any pain or bleeding, and essentially won't know your piles are there.

Jaysfirst · 05/03/2006 21:12

i had them through giving birth. At my 6 wk check i told the GP he percribed me Anusol hc which are suppositories, Proctosedyl ointment ( stronger than anusol i believe) and also fibre gel which you mix with water and drink twice a day, has helped a treat!Wink

MillaH · 05/03/2006 21:59

I've had piles throughout pregnancy and since ds was born 7 weeks ago. Alot of blood, very uncomfortable a lot of the time although proctosedyl ointment (prescribed) helps the piles and lactulose (over the counter) helps any constipation. For internal ones I think you can get suppositories that help. Mine are external and I'm wondering about a long term solution to them as i feel like they may never go now!

Germoloids are good because they have a local anasthetic in them as well.
God - really feel for you - I could hardly sit down for weeks after DS1 was botn Sad

Boopert · 05/03/2006 22:02

Can i just say, i have had mine on and off since ds was born three years ago!
I have tried EVERYTHING!!!!! But apparently Scheriproct suppositories work if you use them for 6 weeks. Failed with me as i gave up after two....

drosophila · 06/03/2006 20:15

Much better today - no bleeding - but am nervous going to loo. I think it's more dehydration as I am still Bfing and dd has been poorly recently so has been feeding a lot. I never seem to get the time to drink. Thanks for all your advise. It's just good to know it's fairly normal.

If you can get past the sheer squirminess of it, then internal anusol suppositories work pretty well. gp prescribed an ointment called scheriproct for me too which can only be used for a week at a time because it is so strong. It works by shrivelling up the external pile but at the same time keeping the area moist so as to prevent chafing.

I could tell you of my encounter with my gp if you like - that will cheer you up a bit? Grin

go on then....

ok then...Blush

Had piles soooo bad with my last pregnancy, I could only shuffle along. I was about 7.5 months at this point so getting quite big. Went to gp, lay down on the couch with my trousers round my knees - first thing was all my loose change fell out of my pocket. Turned onto my side so doc could look. After several seconds had passed, I thought he had finished so I went to swing my legs round to get off the couch - he hadn't finished and was still bending down trying to look. As I swung my feet round I ended up kicking him in the head. Oh my life, the poor gp was feeling round the floor looking for his glasses on all fours whilst I was trying to look dignified pulling my trousers up and gather up all my loose change at the same time!

It was so embarrassing. Even worse as I could only shuffle along, I really couldn't get out of there fast enough! I laugh about it now but at the time it was truly mortifying! Grin

Alas, i must add that i am an expert in the field of piles.
I had only mild piles after the birth of one of my four children, and that I suppose was because he weighed 10lbs 8oz.
I adjusted my diet and never really found them to be a pain.

But, since last summer when I ended up in hospital with food poisoning, and had about 40 bowel movements in one day, a fair bit of damage was caused.

I am now trying to recover from the food poisioning and still feeling the effects of a rather damaged small bowel.(which is another long and painful story, but if you are reading this with a mouth ulcer, well, thats what my bowel has got, in the millions, all over it.)
anyway.................
Last month my piles became very , very painful, but being a busy mum, I just carried on , and went shopping. and something went 'pop' and I started to bleed.
It was incredibly painful, I could hardly walk, and thankfully got my hubby to pick me up and take me home.
The blood was pouring out of me, and i sat on my side on the sofa for a while and it began to ease of.
The Gp took a look, ( and she comented that it didnt look pretty) and prescribed some ointment for infected skin around the' bunch of grapes' and antibiotics.
Then she suggested that I sit on all fours with a packet of frozen peas on my arse.

And so.........I did, and felt that all traces of femmininty had been removed from my person, kneeling in the front room with birds eyes best on my bum, and my four kids running around me. I found it hard to stop them playing leapfrog.
I also found it difficult to drink my tea, or dunk my biscuits.
I did have a little cry, as wondered how hubby would ever find me attractive again, but he reminded me that he has seen four kids come out of my private area, so, I guess he either has a good imagination, or he really does love me.

Thankfully things ( the piles) have died down a little, but remain an everyday irritant.

I live in fear of constipation, which is difficult to aviod when I have been advised to steer clear of high fibre foods.
So I live on fibre gel.
