Sunburn

I have sunburned arms, face and feet, despite the factor 25. What can I do to calm it down, other than moisturise the burned bits?

Aloe Vera gel is amazing. I burn within ten mins I'd any sun exposure (curse of red headed pale skin genes) & this is the only product that instantly calms and soothes! Sold in most health shops and some supermarkets.

janji · 21/07/2012 22:52

P.s if you need instant relief now, natural yoghurt is a good temp measure!

ForgetCollette · 21/07/2012 22:53

I was just coming on to say how good aloe vera gel is but janji beat me to it!

Its good stuff though and the non branded stuff is cheap too so you can really slap lots on.

Wolfiefan · 21/07/2012 22:57

Sudocrem is fab on burns. Do you need medical attention?
Remember to stay hydrated.

Springforward · 21/07/2012 22:57

Thanks. We're on hols in wales, we've got a tesco in the nearest town so I'll look there tomorrow morning. Ouch ouch ouch! DS is still pale and lovely, DH and I look like we've been grilled, not great.

Oh blimey! Here in Australia we use paw paw cream... Can you buy it over there ?

Springforward · 21/07/2012 23:00

Ooh yes, sudocrem, that will surely be easier to come by.

No, I think we're probably ok as long as we take bloody good care of ourselves for the rest of the hols. DS had factor 25 reapplied hourly, we both only did it once. A lesson I will not forget.

Sunburn?? Remind me, what is that again?

Springforward · 21/07/2012 23:01

I've never seen paw paw cream in a shop here TBH. What is it?

OP posts:
Springforward · 21/07/2012 23:04

Yep Cointreu, the irony is not lost on us either..... Normally I'd cover up on the beach, today was a bit less planned because it was so miserable when we left the cottage this morning!!

Ohyoubadbadkitten · 21/07/2012 23:04

Nurofen might calm the inflammation down.

Springforward · 21/07/2012 23:06

We have some here - will try it kitten thank you.

Earl grey tea . Seriously . Make tea and cool in fridge. Apply with soft cloth immersed in tea . Let it drip off do not dry
I usually soak tubifast and apply overnight. Really helps

Sossiges · 21/07/2012 23:09

Aloe vera is tops for sunburn, very cooling.

Totallymum · 21/07/2012 23:35

There's sun in Wales? Let's go!

Moisturise + paracetamol. Hope you are ok tmr

BackforGood · 21/07/2012 23:49

Sunburn in WALES Shock
No wonder it took you by surprise ! Grin

janji · 22/07/2012 00:40

Love the earl grey solution, haven't heard of that one!

Springforward · 22/07/2012 06:40

Yep, Pembrokeshire beaches were amazing yesterday, blue skies and warm enough for DS to splash about in the sea in t-shirt and pants Grin?

OP posts:
Springforward · 22/07/2012 07:13

Wow. Just realised we were wearing factor 50, not 25, yesterday. Never again will I neglect to reapply.... Thank god I was so pfb about DS yesterday, he got sprayed every time he ran within range, DH thought it OTT!

ginmakesitallok · 22/07/2012 07:17

Sudocrem is NOT good for burns - it's too heavy and just keeps the heat in....

Cremolafoam · 22/07/2012 10:40

The tea contains tannic acid which soothes pain. It's really useful when you've nothing else available .Grin

OP - this www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B000R2IBNY/?tag=hydra0b-21&hvadid=9550947429&ref=asc_df_B000R2IBNY is good .
You need to apply well before you go outside ,and it won't work if skin is "greasy" from skin cream ,leave in hair conditioner .

It's also a bit "fumy " when being applied ,so not good near eyes .

But it lasts all day ,isn't greasy so you dont get that awful sand + suncream effect ,doesn't wash off in water .
And doesn't melt and run into your eyes when you sweat .
And you can apply higher factor normal stuff later in the day if necessary ( if pale like me ,or sun v.hot )

Its sold in Boots ,Superdrug etc .

There are quite a few suncreams that you only need to apply once - Piz Buin do a high factor one - if you dont fancy this .
