What help can my family get?

Not sure if I should post under this section but I am hoping somebody maybe able to advise me.

My wonderful grandfather who is in his 80's has an agressive brain tumor and has been told in May that he had between 3 and 6 months left. His 90 year old wife and my lovely mum are caring for him at home and over the last few weeks he has become more frail and needing more help. It his wish that he remains at home and the doctors are arranging a hospital bed to be delivered to him. He is a big man and my mother and grandmother are finding it quite tricky to help on a practical level. Male members of the family pop in when they can to help with lifting etc but I think they need more help.

Does anyone know what help they are entitled to. We really don't want to go the route of a hospice as this is against his wishes and my grandmother would be heartbroken not to be able to care for him at home.

Thanks

Speak to the GP and CAB. It sounds like he needs someone to come in a few times a day to help.

Speak to GP and ask for an urgent social services referal and they will probably meet criteria for continuing health care funding.

Depending on the area you're in some areas have a palliative care sort of one call thing that GP could maybe access for you and they arrange everything.

Is there a macmillan nurse in the community. They sometimes have carers who go in to help

So sorry you are going through this .

You need urgent social services referral for carers and occupational therapist input re aids .
GP might be able to arrange latter .

Hoists can be provided or this www.thiis.co.uk/new-products-cricket.aspx if he can weight bear .
A commode on wheels is helpful .

Slide sheets are helpful for poisitioning someone in bed and you might even want to buy one yourself www.amazon.co.uk/Slide-Sheet-Orange-Tag-72cm/dp/B007TKKML6/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1342953747&sr=8-4

Of course you shouldn't have to and you need to be shown how to use one ,but time is of the essence and IME there are You Tube videos giving guidance on everything .

You might want to post over here www.mumsnet.com/Talk/elderly_parents
