Constipation, Anal fissure, pregnant: TMI alert.

Normally I manage my constipation, and therefore my anal fissure absolutely fine. Movicol and / or fybogel, lots of water and fruit, bit of germaloids if the fissure reappears, rectogesic ointment if fissure very painful for more than a couple of days.

But now at 16 weeks pregnant it's the worst it has ever been. And I cannot use the rectogesic because of being pregnant. I have just attempted to give birth to a very hard turd. It must have had shoulder dystocia or something, because it got jammed half way out. So I put my finger up my arse a bit and dislodged it. Enough blood dripping to make me wonder about a miscarriage! (But last time I had one of those it was coming out of my vag so I'm not that worried). I've just put some sudocream up there as that's all I could find right now.

This pregnancy I have been either constipated or had diarrhoea since the BFP, and terrible wind. My diet is not great, but I am eating fruit if not much else some days.

Now what?

I would ask a pharmacist if there is anything else OTC that you could use. I would definitely see a Dr though as soon as you can. Have you tried lactulose? Liquorice is supposed to have a laxative effect. Drink lots of water if taking lactulose as it makes the bowel take up water & softens the stool. Hope you get some relief.

thanks. DH is a pharmacist! I have tried lactulose, movicol usually works better for me, though I have had that this morning too. And the water. I'm not as sore as expected today, but I can't keep dealing with this, it's only going to get worse.

Lots and lots and lots of dietary fibre. It's finally helped my AF heal after six months. Within a week of drastically increasing my fibre intake I got my first pain free pooh.

Fruit and veg, cereals, fruit juice. Lots and lots. Look up the values and aim for 20g a day

A teaspoon of linseeds left in a (small) glass of water overnight and then swallowed. The linseeds soak up the water and turn into a kind of gelatinous mush which is not only fibrous but greatly smooths the passage, iykwim.

Repeat daily.

Also psyllium husk for instant super fibre.

Please try prune juice. It's not pleasant to drink but it really really works. I had lots of problems with constipation when pregnant, ate tons of fruit and oats and stuff for breakfast but prune juice was the only thing that worked.

bonzo77 · 21/07/2012 23:16

OK, adding prune juice to my shopping list. I like prunes, though they make me fart a lot.
downindorset what is the flaxseed stuff like to get down? I am rather gaggy at the moment and funny textures are the worst thing (e.g porridge).
I guess I can get these and psyllium husk from a health food shop. What do you do with the psyllium husk? Is it powder or a tablet? Do you need loads of fluid to make it work? Are all these going to give me wind? Even farting hurts the AF at the moment!

there's no way round it is there? I need to drink more. I have almost a phobia of drinking. I have to force it down.

Hi, the soaked flaxseeds are tasteless and a bit like runny jelly. The thing is not to go for too much. They're very benign so shouldn't make you gag. Pretty cheap as well if you give it a go and it doesn't work.

Psyllium capsules you could pick up from any health food shop. I would drink plenty of water, that's good advice for you anyway... as you know!

I've suffered from these problems and the linseed solution is the best I've ever found, it's very gentle, yet effective.

Prune juice is good as well.

I wish you luck, miserable feeling I know!
