Ingenious ways of getting medicine into a 4 mo

Hi all, dd is 4mo and I'm desperate to get some medised into her, she's just sooo stuffed up and choking at night on the phlem. BUT she will not take any medicine, medised or calpol, just spits it right out. Never had this problem at all with ds so a bit flummoxed! I've used the calpol spoon and the Nurophen syringe (obviously not with nurophen as she's too young for this), but she just won't take it. She's exclusively bf atm.

Helllppp! :)

Have you tried expressing into a bottle or does she hate that? We just diluted DD's meds after her op into a bottle of EBM, it was the only way!

fastasleep · 05/03/2006 12:21

You could always try expressing into a container, mixing in meds, using a syringe to dribble medicated milk into her mouth... if you're feeling really masochistic!

zippitippitoes · 05/03/2006 12:42

have you tried karvol and raising the cot end

busybaby · 05/03/2006 13:21

Have you tried 'snuffle babe'? It seems to help my dd sleep better - she sounds very similar to your dd at the moment! I tend to rub some onto a muslin and either hang it over the cot (out of reach) or put it in the radiator. Also I rub it on the underside of her sheet (so she can't rub it into her eyes).

The nursery smells lovely at the moment!

dd (9mths) is given medicine by syringe. She did hate the antibiotics we had to give her a few weeks ago and I got around it by puting the syringe towards the back of her throat (not so far that she gags) and release the medicine in about 2-3 fast shots iykwim. Never cause dd a problem as it always went to fast down her throat for her to notice! She was usually to busy biting on the syringe.!! BTW medised can be mixed with jucie I think..May help..? Mix with a little juice or water..? Not to sure if 4 mths may be a bit early for juice, but as a one off.??

misdee · 05/03/2006 15:05

you could water it down slightly, and put it into a bottle if u have one. i used to do this for dd2 who owuldnt take medicines without being sick. she would take calpol mixed with warm water i na bottle easily tho.

MerlinsBeard · 05/03/2006 15:12

yes medised can be added to a bottle/juice, not sure on the age tho, not got any in to check. Snuffle babe is good as is baby vicks (same thing really), or a few drops of Karvol on a bib tied to the cot railings.

busybaby · 05/03/2006 20:24

Hipp organic juice is suitable from 4 months.

HappyMumof2 · 05/03/2006 20:35

when dd was in hospital at 13wks, they gave me a tiny syringe, just enough to hold 2.5mls, and I gave it to her very slowly, into the side of her mouth. Have you tried just going really slowly with small bits at a time?

starlover · 05/03/2006 20:37

will she take it from one of those dummy dispensers?

with ds the only way i could get him to take it was wait until he was asleep and then give it in the dummy... he just used to suck it all up

99redballoons · 06/03/2006 13:54

Alot of great ideas, thanks!

She sometimes takes water from a bottle so will try the bottle suggestions. Already have the cot raised, using snufflebabes, and a humidifier in her (our) room. Didn't want to introduce juice just yet, but may consider it if we have another bad night! I have tried the syringe slowly so will try a few short sharp bursts and see what (choking?!?) reaction I get.

So frustrating they take things so differently. Ds just loves taking medicine and even asks for it when he's not ill! (just has to see the bottle on the shelf lol!) (but ofcourse he doesn't get any!!)

Many thanks.

Forgot to mention a friend also suggested getting her to lick it off my (clean) finger! Might take awile but she might not take it in such large quantities to be able to spit it out. Thanks again!

If you are desperate for calpol, you can get paracetemol suppositories from your GP. For medised, though, I don't think that will be available. Have you tried squirting it in her mouth while sleeping? She might swallow some before she realises what you've done. Then again, she might be really pissed off and scream the house down rather than sleep.

ernest · 07/03/2006 15:12

i was gonna say suppositories too. It's standard practice here. I've used suppositories for all of mine & switched to calpol etc at about age 2 when they can understand & cooperate.

It's really quick, painless & also gets into blood stream faster

Bozza · 07/03/2006 15:20

Just put the syringe into her mouth and get your DH to tickle her under the chin to force her to swallow.

99redballoons · 09/03/2006 16:45

Thanks for the continued suggestions.
