robinw, can you tell me what AW's "early comments" were or where I can find them? I've always believed that he did not make outlandish comments, especially early on and all the time while employed by RFH.

Jimjams · 16/12/2003 09:51

The allergy induced autism page gives a list of symptoms of gut problems. this would be after the damage was done though.

AW has always said that the MMR may be affecting a small number of children. He hasn't changed his story at all- right from the beginning- it even says in this original paper that it is not proof of a link. To pretend he has ever said otherwise is just part of the campiagn to discredit him.

check this out robinw, re: worms/gut!

Davros · 16/12/2003 14:28

robinw, I am not trying to draw you in or challenge you. I just thought I'd be lazy and get the info from you as a shortcut to find out if I have been under a misapprehension. I am genuinely interested to find out if I've been mistaken. I realise that I should do the donkey work of checking the articles etc myself but thought I'd take the easy option and ask someone else.

Jimjams · 16/12/2003 16:50

Don't bother looking Davros - there aren't any crazy comments - the most outlandish comment he made (early on as well) was that single vaccines should be given whilst the safety of the MMR was established. he's only ever suggested that a small group are affected- he obviously thinks that those children shouldn't be written off as collateral.

robinw I'm sorry to hear about your neighbour, and believe me I know what you mean about having too much going on to argue about pointless stuff.

I think we did have a decent conversation about probiotics. Certainly people following biomedical interventions for autism give probiotics as a matter of course. It still wouldn't work as a protective effect though if it was the measles causing the damage- no-one knows though. Thinking about my sons's development and particularly his dietary changes I would say his gut damage ocurred due to or after the herpes infection and antibiotics. Sunderland were unable to say whether ds2 would be at risk.

I'm sorry if my last message was snotty, but like Davros I would genuinely be interested to be pointed in the direction of any outlandish comments becuase I genuinely haven't ever seen any from AW. Certainly in the debate the other night- his most recent outing he was reasoned and didn't say anything remotely mad. If he is saying crazy stuff I would be interested to hear it.

Does anyone know of a brand of probiotics for a 2yearold?
DD has been on a low dose trimetropin (cant spell it though) for the past 18 months and she's likely to be for the next couple of years. I am a bit worried about the damage antibiotics could do to her immune system and general health and I have been thinking about probiotics, but I don't think I could get her to drink Yakult or the Danone stuff, anyone knows of anything else?

GeorginaA · 17/12/2003 10:59

webmum does your dd like yoghurt? Muller do a probiotic yoghurt which is quite nice although I think they're a bit big for a 2 year old - you might want to separate out into two pots in the fridge and save the other half for the next day! I'm sure there's other brands of probiotic yoghurt too, but that's the one I noticed last time I was in the supermarket.

katierocket · 17/12/2003 11:25

webmum - I give my DS (2 yrs) natural probiotic with spoonful of jam stirred into it to slightly sweeten it.

He has just been on 2 courses of antibiotics recently and I questionned the Dr about whether this would lower his general immune system. He was adamant that it wouldn't - that the problem with Drs prescribing antibiotics necessarily is that it lowers the resistance of the general community to particular bugs hence greating 'superbugs'.

katierocket · 17/12/2003 11:25

duh - that should be natural probiotic yogurt

aloha · 17/12/2003 12:28

Webmum, my ds adores Danone - it's very sweet you know and yummy for toddlers. My ds also really likes drinking it from the little bottle like mummy and daddy. V expensive though!

aloha · 17/12/2003 12:28

Also, any live yoghurt is great. Add honey to increase the effect of the probiotics in it.
