I bought a pedometer the other day, and have just started using it.

Anyone want to join me? Any tips? Anyone with experience?

Good for you... I have been walking to work for the last 3 years now and my husband bought me one 2 years ago.. I live and work in London so he bought me one with an alarm so if anyone attacks me, I can pull the string and a very loud alarm goes off!!! I didn't realise that I was doing 3000 steps a day (only walking to and from work). I keep it around my waist. I have a baby now, still walk to work (baby goes to a nursery next to work), my pedometer still join us and I feel fit and safe with it. So I hope you will enjoy to know how many steps you do... It is quite surprising....

Well yesterday it was about 19000 - but that was a mad day.... long story.

Today I've only done 5150 so far :(

19000 steps....Shock well done! MAD DAY... LONG STORY! It can only be a long story... come on, can't tell me that and not explain the 19000 steps...
Where did you walk today, in the country side, in a park or just shopping on a saturday?????

SleepySuzy · 04/03/2006 21:25

I did warn you......

Yesterday.....4.20pm....the snow is falling like billy-o.....dh has just finished his treatment at the hospital and thinking of waiting around to then pick me up from work. I told him not to bother about me, but go get dd from nursery and take her home. I could make my own way home, as long as she's fine.

So he set off.....then just before I finish work, he rings me to say he is stuck at the bottom of a hill, half way there. He can't get up the hill, due to the snow, and has been queuing all the way there (this journey, by the way, normally takes less than 15 mins).

In the meantime, I get a lift from a colleague, part way home, and walk the rest (about half an hour in the snow). DH rings, he is by home, and won't drive any further, traffic is gridlocked.

So...I get the 3 wheeler buggy out, walk to nursery (about 3/4 hour or more in the snow), and get there, soaked up to my ankles, (could easily burst into tears at this point, I'm so cold and tired).

Then....I walk all the way back home...pushing dd in the pushchair. It is about 7.45pm when I arrive home. Then DH wants to know what is for tea....arrggghhh!!!! (but I don't complain, as he has just had chemo)

So there you have it....my 19000 steps in one day!!!

Sleepysuzy, I bought one from Tesco last week but thought it was broken as clocked 20,000 steps by six pm.... I did have a long-ish walk and didn't sit down all day round the house. That sound right (I'd love to join you, btw Smile)

SleepySuzy · 04/03/2006 21:35

Yep, that could be right (mine's from Tesco too)

THIS IS A DAY TO REMEMBER... Smile You sound very cheerful despite everything else... WELL DONE YOU!!!!

Keep maybe the pedometer for Spring but then actually it is quite fun to know that you kept the pedometer going on such a day... All the best.

dinny · 04/03/2006 21:39

I think the Tesco ones seem really sensitive. Wondered if it clocked a step when I was just bending down etc - just can't believe I walked that much. Had done 4,000 before I left the house at about 8.45am!

SleepySuzy · 04/03/2006 21:40

hehehe, thank you, makes me feel more positive, actually. But covering up the stress, it's starting to come out physiologically :(

That does sound a bit much Dinny, but it depends how long you are wearing it, before you go out?

OP posts:
dinny · 04/03/2006 21:46

lol, Sleepysuzy, I did get up at 5.20 with ds so suppose it could be possible...

sunshinebaby · 04/03/2006 21:48

Mine came from M&S. It is not as sensitive... To give you a rough idea... For a 30mns walk, I do 1500 steps....

SleepySuzy · 04/03/2006 22:01

Well, I don't wear mine until after my 7am shower, so I could be doing a little more, but not much.

Off to bed now, so get counting for tomorrow!!

Maybe answer is to buy both and wear one on each hip, lol.

Earlybird · 04/03/2006 22:13

Dinny - I'm a diehard pedometer wearer, and aim to do 10,000 steps per day - which is about 5 miles. 4,000 steps is the equivalent of about 2 miles. Is it possible that you did that much by 8.45 AM? Have you checked the stride setting to ensure it's accurately programmed?

Not trying to discourage you.....

dinny · 05/03/2006 07:48

ah, maybe it's the stride setting. how long is the average stride for a woman (I'm 5.7)? couldn't find a tape measure so did guess it....

Earlybird · 05/03/2006 10:56

Hi Dinny - Not absolutely positive, but I think my pedometer is set at 2'4" per stride. Will check and post again if I've remembered incorrectly. Happy walking!
