Hayfever - bunged up nose and sneezing

DS2 (16) suffers fairly badly from hayfever, and takes anti-histamines daily for 6 months of the year.

This year he's been suffering more than usual from a bunged up nose. Beconase has helped, but apparently can only be used for short periods.

Is there anything else that would hepl?

Can he go see your GP? When mine is bad (which it has been this year, I'm usually over the worst of it by mid July Hmm), the GP gives me a nasal spray called Nasofan which is pretty good.

MY Ds also suffers. I do , but not as badly as him.

He has usually taken the cetirizine hydrochloride tabs, but this year haven't worked well enough.
I took him back - and the practice nurse prescribed him some stronger tabs- and the beconase. (He didn't like the beconase, and to be fair his nose issues are much better). The new ones are calledFexofenadine.

It seems to have gone on for longer this summer too. My eyes are itchy now - I have just been out running. I am loathe to take any meds as they all make me drowsy - and I have trouble enoug staying awake.

Hope he feels better soon!

Has he tried those balms that you smear around the nostrils to prevent pollen getting in?

I forget what they are called - I have seen them in Holland and Barrett.

He's tried smearing vaseline around his nose at night, and it's helped a bit.

He's on cetirizine hydrochloride and he uses the sodium cromoglycate eyedrops. This combination has worked well for the last few years, but now he is waking up very bunged up and is snotty and sneezy quite often during the day.

I think a trip back to the GP is in order by the sounds of things.

He should try Sudafed Blocked Nose Spray. It's brilliant for me, like a miracle spray. I can be completely bunged up and 5 minutes later, completely clear.

Thx Amatuermummy!

I found a nasal spray called Nasacort was the best thing that worked for me.

OneHandFlapping · 19/07/2012 12:20

I have put it on my Tesco list Julialyne!

You can only get it on prescription sorry I forgot to mention that. I tried all OTC sprays & tablets & Nasacort was the only thing that helped me.

OneHandFlapping · 20/07/2012 11:16

Apparently you can get it over the counter at the Pharmacy!

That's good. I'm in Australia & have been here 9yrs now so things must have changed since I got it. It really did seem to work & I just needed the spray & not the antihistamine as well. I think my Dr suggested taking it around May time before the hay fever season starts. I don't get hay fever at all here though.
