My dps dad had a heart attack yesterday. He is in hospital, my DP has gone to see him today. I am ever so worried about his dad (and his mum), apparently his dad will need a heart bypass, hmm.

I don't think his dad is critically ill, but dp is very very vague about most things. I wanted to go to the hospital with him, but am full of cold so not fair on his dad if I pass to him!!

I was in placement in hospital when I found out and all the nurses kept talking about his dad dying Shock! His dad is 53 and v.healthy.

My brother in law had a heart attack at 40 and is fine now even though he continnues to drinl like a fish and eat too much. Martin Sheen had a heart attack when filming Apocalypse Now (years ago he was pretty young) and look at him now!

My Dad had two heart attacks and had a bypass at 78. He died of cancer later but his heart was strong to the end. Bypasses are the most commonly performed ops in world I believe.

My dad had a heart attack in 1999. He has been fine since, has regular check ups. Had to lose waight.

He was in hospital for about a week or so I think.

My dh had heart failure 11 years ago followed by a triple bypass. Since then he has fathered 3 children! Grin The last one only 7 months ago. He is now 60 and apart from taking pills every day is fine. A bit prone to fatigue but he does hold down a full time job and is also renovating our house at the weekends. The bypass is an extremely successful operation and your dps dad should feel better even within a few days. Good luck.

If anyone is interested they my dp said his dad will be in until the beginning of the week, he still has some clots in his system Sad and he will prob need bypass. Ho hum. This was actually a missed MI, he had it on Thurs but was only admitted Fri.

My grandad had a bypass and it was fantastic but I know its a very big operation and hmm. I think I am more upset than my dp about it all!

I have a story about the miracle man that is my FIL. He had a triple bypass in 1980. Another one in 1991. He's had SEVEN heart attacks since and he's STILL HERE. He's now 80.

His consultant calls him a medical marvel!

All the best for your dps dad.

My Nan had a heart attack at a very unhealthy 703, was given weeks to live and saw out the next decade. When she went she was ready and had, I think, decided to stop fighting: she actually said goodbye to me three weeks before at ehr 60th wedding anniversary bash: that had been her target to see.

one of my dad's brothers had a heart attack at 37. he had a quadruple bypass.

he is now a fit, healthy 56-year-old. he lost 6 stone, took up yoga - he's been practicing for 19 years and drinks exactly one glass of red wine/nite (he was never a smoker or a big drinker).

My Nanna had her first heart attack in her late 30's, she went on to have 4 more over the next 40 years. She survived them all and no bypass surgery was ever needed Smile. She also suffered a major thrombosis (requiring leg amputation) & 3 strokes (the last one killed her at 79). She was a bit of a 'creaking gate', my Nan Wink

My dad had a heart attack at about 45, he was fit, healthy didnt overeat, smoke , drink too much etc the dr said it was a family thing and that he had high cholestrol which he he didnt know about. He was fine, Nearly 15 years on, he still takes tablets every day but he has never had another attack, fingers crossed. I would get your dp to have his cholestrol done. Wishing him all the best.

My gran had a heart attack in August. She is 65 (I think, maybe a year or so younger?), she was already in a wheelchair and paralyzed down one side from a stroke 25 years ago. She stayed for a few weeks in hospital and now doing really well at home :)

my FIL had a heart attack when he was around 50.He was a heavy drinker and smoker then though. He went on to have a bypass about 1o-15 yrs ago(can't remember exactly).

No problems since.

fairyjay · 05/03/2006 18:15

My dad had a major stroke at 59 following by bypass surgery at 61 - they found that he had had a heart attack, and never known. He had a further bypass at 70, and died at 78 from a combination of things, including MRSA.

Inbetween times he had asthma, diabetes and skin cancer.

The old cliche - until he was 59 he had never had a days illness.

THE GOOD SIDE -
I had 19 years of my Dad during which I - and the rest of the family - appreciated him and each other in a way we would never have done without the wake-up call.

My mum actually had two heart attacks, one whilst I was in hospital having dd (who is now 12), and another 2 yrs. later. She is on drugs, and gets fairly tired - but she will be 80 later this year!

Try not to worry too much - I'm really thinking of you all.
